1965 quarter double die?

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Brandon Purdum, Jul 8, 2024.

  1. I have a 1965 quarter with a possible double die error on the obverse. The doubling is most prominent on "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the West side of Washington's bust/face, though there might be some slight doubling on the date and "LIBERTY."

Is this DD or just machine doubling, or even just PMD? I scoured Variety Vista but couldn't find a match. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Flat and shelf like. Also, true doubling makes the devices larger, these are smaller. Mechanical doubling.

Look at the W and E. Dead giveaway that it’s not a DD

It is Die deterioration doubling - Not a Doubled die variety

Also. The correct numismatic terminology is Doubled Die, not double die.
And, Doubled Die falls under the variety category, not the mint error category.

It was minted by a worn die which caused that type of doubling. It’s called MD or mechanical doubling. A nice worn example but a spender.

They didn't make no "double die" obverses on 1965. Nor no reverses, neither.
