1964 SMS Quarter?

I'm struggling to find resources to help me identify this quarter. It looks/feels different than other 1964 quarters I have had in my possession, and I have seen the pictures of 1964 SMS quarters to compare it to, but I'm very new to coin collecting and can't seem to reach a conclusion. So I'm hoping some of the brilliant minds here can help a brother out.

I'm afraid that isn't an SMS quarter. The 1964 Special Mint Set wasn't a public release by the U.S. Mint; it is believed that they were unofficially produced at the behest of Eva Adams, U.S. Mint Director at the time. What you have is a lightly circulated 1964 quarter that is only worth silver content.

Awesome, thank you for the speedy response and the information! Coin collecting is fun, just difficult to get into, I'm glad this resource exists.

This is very interesting. I mean if heritage auctions says that's what distinguishes it from other coins then it's hard for a noob like me to argue with. I'd be interested to hear what some of the long standing members of this forum think though.

Thank you for posting that, it's a beautiful coin, but to my untrained eye the coin that Rabbi posted in the OP looks to have the same positioning of the A and the arrow points, though not the immaculate condition. I'm going to pull some of my MS slabs and see if I can see the difference between the SMS and a regular MS strike. It probably has to be under magnification (for me anyway). Neat stuff, thanks for posting all, here is the reverse of a PCGS slabbed MS63 1949-D, I am still having a hard time seeing it (how the A and arrow points are different). Is it clear to those of you with better eyes and some experience? IMG_E3895.JPG IMG_E3894.JPG

Thanks for the input! My pictures weren't as good as they could have been, since this was one of my first posts. I could probably go back and take better photos now.

Coin collecting is easy to get into! Step 1: If you like it keep it! Step2: If you like it, refer to step one!!! Simple as that!!! It's also easy to learn about something you enjoy doing!!!!
