Lincolns beard is missing....smooth as a baby's behind...the rest of the coin is in great condition...All I see is lincolns jutting chin with no beard.
    Anyone see this before?:goofer:

This penny is sooo shiny. Can someone tell me why he doesn't have a beard?

I'm still a beginner, but from what I can see, it looks double stamped (not double'd die'd)...And when a coin gets double stamped, it loses a lot of it's detail. This is just my opinion, so dont take my word for it.

Isn't it a little ironic that he was elected president 100 years prior to 1960? He didn't have a beard then either, he only grew one in the fall of 1860 after a little girl suggested he grow one.

No, you haven't done anything wrong. Its the weekend and most of us like to get out for the couple days. It's a weaker strike. Its common on nearly all copper pennies.

Well I can see the outline of the beard, but a little to shiny a picture. Of course it still looks nice for a 1960 penny.

I have since found two more, 1958 aand 1980 that are the exact same way..

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

It is a weak strike or worn dies. Not only is this extremely common, there is absolutely zero premium for this, and it will actually decrease the value of the coin. The grade will suffer as well.

You really need to read a couple of books about errors. You seem to be posting a lot of dirty, damaged, not valuable cents. Take some time, read a book, and learn what you are supposed to be looking for.

That's just a wee bit harsh

Sometimes the truth is harsh. And it is very true that this is not an error. It is very true that this is incredibly common. And it is very true that this is worthless or can hurt the price.

It is also very true that reading a book or two could be incredibly beneficial and lead to far more productive discoveries.

Sorry if it hurts, but I don't want to sugarcoat things, and in the long run a dose of reality is far more beneficial than not hurting someone's feelings.

I do agree, that was a bit harsh, but I am 43 year old mother of a two year old, so....i like a little sugar-coating every now and then. I see you are straight to your point, and if you think what I am posting is not helping me by getting good advice, then why am I here? how and in what way have you told me something beneficial? I do a lot of reading, and do have some coins that are nice and valuable, I am trying to learn about errors. I think it is interesting and I do read about what I am looking for...did your mama beat you?

It is just from worn Master dies. Lincoln cents from 1960-64 are notorious as the “Big chin cents”.

I also found this out eleven days ago when I posted this. I don't care if it is worthless now...who knows where the wind will blow tomorrow, and which new errors will be worth more than they are today.
