would anyone know anything about this? The star on the 1958 is much larger than the star on the 1961. The 1958 that i have found is the only one I have seen to be this way. all others are small. Also if anyone has a 1958 jefferson nickel it would be appreciated if you could tell me if all stars are like this one on the 1958. thankyou
According to The Jefferson Nickel Analyst by Bernard A Nagengast, the star was enlarged on the 57 and 58 then reverted back to the normal size in 59 for no known reason. He aslo states that small star varieties have been rumored but never substantiated.
Hi Bordeaux, The other part of your question was whether or not someone had 58s to check. I have one roll each of 58d and 58p uncirculated nickels. None of them have a small star like the second coin you are showing. Just keep looking as you never know where something extra special will pop up. jeankay
Another thing about the 57 to 59 nickels is that for some reason they often come with a dark coloration. In MS they are sometimes referred to as "Black Beauties". The color is not a result of toning but seems to be inherent in the metal itself, probably from some trace element in the alloy.
Here is a link on the 'Black Beauty' subject from some time ago here on Cointalk. http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=16509&highlight=Black+Beauties
I just came up with a Jefferson 1958 small star nickle , are they usually this small and how common are they yes it does have a black look to it.
