My son has a 1953 D silver colored wheat penny we are trying to find out about. Online I've found everything from it's a science project to it's made from zinc. I've attached pictures - any help would be appreciated.
If it is the same physical size as any other cent, then (1) if it was made of zinc, it would weigh about 2.5 grams +/- small tolerance. And (2) if it is normal copper alloy, it will weigh about 3.1 grams +/- small tolerance grams. The chance of being plated with zinc ( science experiment) is 99.99+% or better. I have made in my classes several hundreds, and where they go later ....I do not know. Jim
Hello, welcome to CoinTalk Your 1953 looks like it’s nickel plated Are you sure about the weight? Do other cents weigh more or less?
Regular wheat cents are 3.11 +/- I’m guessing yours is 3.3 gr, not 2.3 grams Nickel plating is commonly done on coins The pure nickel is magnetic. Larry
Here’s one I found searching rolled nickels. It at least has some value since it’s a Wartime coin with 35% silver
I had lunch with a really cool gal the other day. She brought a gold plated quarter to show me. She was sad to learn the truth but was happy when I paid for lunch.
