Does anyone have information on why this nickel is chocolate brown?

It was probably found metal detecting.
Definitely not a mint error, just environmental damage.

I've dug up a lot of nickels like that.

In 1948 did they use a different alloy for a short time?Going to weigh and compare to a silver.

    It's a corroded/enviornmentally damaged normal Nickel.

The weight of all US nickels, including silver War Nickels,
is exactly the same, so weighing it won't mean anything.

Instead of 5.1 grams or 77 grains, it probably weighs just
a very little under those numbers due to the corrosion.

I'll guess that it weighs 4.9 to 5 grams, or 75.5 to 77 grains.
