1948*** Hello, I am in no way a coin collector of any sort, but i was at my job, and i got change back out of a vending machine and i found this. it looks like its been to hell and back, but i dont see a mint on it. is this normal? it should be right next to the date on the bottom right isnt it? i looked extremely close, and there doesnt seem to be any type of raise or anything that could be worn off there. also judging by the corrosion can u tell if this has silver in it? i know that around the war they didnt have nickel so put into them so they used other materials. Just wondering.. im 21 so im not as experienced as u guys, please help me out, and if u want it i will sell u it. Sorry for the bad pictures i captured them with an ipod nano PS i also have a 1971 half dollar in really nice condition. if anyone wants that.. so tell me what i have here
I think your coins is post mint damage, maybe someone sanded the mint mark away. Here is one of Paul's to show the mint mark.
Ace, the mintmark on war nickels should be above the dome on the reverse, which I cannot make out from your pics, also you are right about the composition, they are made of copper, silver and mangenese.
thanks guys for your help, and i still dont see a mint above the dome at all.is it possible for one not to be printed?
Chances are that it was either struck-through grease or some other debris, it's merely worn off, or it's a Henning nickel. There are others here who can tell you more about Hennings and their values.
It doesn't have the surface characteristics of a Henning. I agree with Borgovan, I think this is a 1948 nickel.
Just FYI, Just FYI, It is believed that Henning made his counterfeit nickels dated 1939, 1944, 1946, 1947 and 1953. Henning’s 1944 is characterized by there being no P mint mark over the dome.
