So I was scanning over a few of my penny's and I came across this 1943 D with an S behind/above it. I have never seen nor heard of it before. It is definitely raised above the base surface and does not appear to be any form of corrosion. Let me know your opinions please! rickmp Frequently flatulent.

The zinc has flaked off at various points of your coin. The way some of the zinc has fallen off creates the illusion of an S. Purely chance. I see nothing more.

Yep...what rick said. Not an S...just environmental damage.

Ah well, figured as much. Does Zinc raise the surface when it flakes off? It looks so real and it being a slightly raised "s" I nearly fell out of my chair when I found it lol.

    it's a imaginary S mint mark

I think what happened is, when the corrosion fell off, some of the surface was removed. This gives the remaining surface the illusion of being elevated.

Thanks for lending me some expertise guys :). I'm relatively new at coin collecting so I'm sure I have plenty more to come.

You're going to do just fine. You had some legitimate questions, good pictures showing your concerns and handled the responses quite well. You are a welcomed addition to the Coin Talk site. Glad to have you.
