I go this dime, and it appears to be the variety for that year. It looks like the bottom of the 4 and 1 above the 2.

Unfortuneately this is not the 1942/1 or the 1942/1 D... but most likely die wear.

Do you not see the 1 above the 2 in the second before last pic?

If it doesn't look like the pictures below then unfortunately it is not either of the overdates.

I think he is referring to what looks like a faint imprint Of (1) just to the right of the 2 I think. The second picture shows it best.

There's something there but I can't tell what it is, there's marks all around that area.

I think its just an optical illusion... late date mercs have a lot of weird doubling.

The bottom of the 4 doesn't show the stair step as the genuine pieces do.

If you look at the upturned shot, you just see an outline of the bottom

I don't think it is a strong as the Whitman example, but at my view, you can see it a lot better. Maybe I should take better pics.

Sorry , but you should be able to see the overdates with no problem with no magnification , with too much magnification your eyes and brain will sometimes see things that aren't really there , JMO .

I agree that this is neither the 1942/1941 or 1942/1941 D . There is really nothing on the coin that resembles it.

    Thanks,
    Bill

It may not be the same error. And I think the closer you look, the better details can come into view. As long as you can decipher the details. If not, use your lower magnification till you catch up.

I just noticed this, but I think this coin is a die error. The sharp angle you see above the 2, I think is the left side of the 4. Look at the last pic, and it looks like a 2 to the upper right of the printed 2.

jessash, I don't think you are crazy. I found two Mercs that look exactly like this. The first one looks more like the one you have and the second one has more of the body of the number one in addition to the top part as well. Also, it appears that there is a weak D on the reverse. Could be my eyes playing tricks on me, but I don't know. I figure I will take my mercs to Cinci this weekend and have some experts look at them. Hopefully I will have a good answer for you on Friday or Saturday. What are you using to get those close pics? I tried, but I couldn't get up that close.

I have a Samsung Digimax 420, which is not that impressive, but I take my 10X loupe and place it before my lens. Hold it on there tight and I can get 4x closer for a total of 14X. I usually place the bottom part of the loupe on the table to stabilize it.

And the pics I'm talking about is the first set of pics.

The 1942 dime in the OPs post is competely normal. No variety.
