    Hello everyone,

I would like some opinions on this 1939 Penny. Is it an actual error or was it damaged post-mint?

It's hard to see in the scans, but on the reverse there is a bump where the punch (or whatever was used) nearly broke through the coin.

    Thanks,

    Karl

I would say post-mint damage, esp. when looking at the last picture showing the full coin. If there is a bump on the reverse, then that is definitely a good indication that someone punched the obverse (like you stated), and there's no reason why they would do that at the mint.

Yup, PMD. Nothing that I know of would cause a matching bump on the obverse. If it were a strike through, the obverse would be unaffected.
