    Hey guys,
I just recently purchased some coins at an auction and one 1938-D mercury dime was labeled as "slanted d". I compared the mintmark to some other mercs I have and there was more of a slant on the 38-D than on the other. I do not have another 38-D to compare it to so I wasn't sure if they all came out this year in this year or not. Were all the mintmarks slanted this year for some reason? I will try to post pics as soon as possible. Thanks

Here are two images I found through a quick google search. Do either of them look like yours?

I didn't find any reference to the slanted D in Red Book, nor in The Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes...but there are others who know far more than I that could maybe shine some light.

Ahh, image links borked up for some reason - I reuploaded them with my own little paint lines drawn in. It seems there is a slight difference between the two.

trying to upload pics now...the pic on the bottom coins appears more "on its side" than the one on the top. I compared mine to the bottom and it appears to be even more slanted to the right. My upload site is going really slow right now but will post as soon as they get uploaded

Sounds more like a variety than an error to me. Photos would help.

I posted the 38-d next to a 37-d for comparison. The following two pictures are just a close up reverse of the two coins in the top picture. Sorry if the uploads are bad, my usual site was giving me problems.

I can't see anything in those tiny photos.

I just checked several of my Mercury Head dimes including the 38-D, 37-D, 40-D amonst others and I your 'D's look no different than mine.
Acceptable tolerance of slant---nothing special. Good eye though. IMHO zeke

I checked the Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes. He mentions a "single repunched mintmark variety" for the 38-d, but it's not the one you have. His picture for a common 1938-d looks just like the mintmark you posted. The variety mint mark has the D attached to the lowest leaf.

All mintmarks on the Mercury Dimes were handpunched into the working die so each die will be different than the others. Location and slant seem to be within tolerances.
