hello all. this is my first post. i recently acquired my grandmothers large coin and currency collection and have spent the last few weeks sorting through all of the items. i came across this 1934-A Hawaii $5-star note that seems to be in fine condition. I really could not find any information on the internet on the value, but i found a lot of information on how rare this particular note is. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to its value and if it would be worth submitting to pcgs for grading. I have included 2 photos as well. it has no creases or pin holes, seems to have maintained its color well and has a small bent corner. any information or insight would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance.
You're a lucky guy Greg, the standard guide to small size paper money lists this at $10,000 in VF up to $40,000 in Ch Cu. I would really look into getting this note graded by a TPG. BTW welcome to Coin Talk.
pennywise: Is this an F-2302*? The Guide Book of US Paper Money, 2nd Edition, Friedberg gives $7,500 in VF-20 HAWAII overprint note [Wikipedia]
Yes it is, could just be different guide, different prices. It jumped $1500 since the last edition of Schwartz/Lindquist book.
This is a rare note. Please post the reverse so we can see if it is a mule or not. Please take a nice clear image if you can because the back plate number must be readable. If the back plate number is 939 or higher it is a Mule and could be worth more. It appears to be a Mule from the Series and the listing in the 9th S?L Book. Congrats on a Great Note.. Indeed send it off to PCGS or PMG for Grading.. Regards, RickieB
Quite a nice note you have there, and quite rare—there were only 8,000 of these printed. Do not be concerned about this being a mule, as the 1934As are non-mules.
Found this one from an H.A. auction 5 yrs. ago http://currency.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=364&Lot_No=16640&src=pr In case you can't open the link, it sold for $10,350
thank you all for your responses. i will be sending the note in to be graded and will post new pictures and the results when i get it back!
Greg, Care to post anything else from her collection, I am sure there must be more nice pieces. Thanks for posting, John
Jamie.. you are correct..my mistake..it is the Series 1934 that has the Mule w/ back plate 939 or higher. Where's me glasses when I need em..LOL Thanks.. RickieB
You are very luck to say the least,Your Grandmother Knew her notes and must have loved you very much !
I think someone swam home from the islands to the mainland with many of these notes, there seem to be so many of them that are "tanned" Here are mine: $10 1934-A F-2303, HAWAII OVERPRINT - Brown Seal SN: L28437070B $20 1934-A F-2305, HAWAII OVERPRINT - Brown Seal SN: L69379246A
I never thought about them swimming here!! That may have been the case with one of mine. It looks like the bill came over in the palm of a scuba diver. I got it from my Grandfather though so to me it's priceless. :thumb:
hello all. am going to send this note out next week for grading and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on the safest way to package the note. thanks!
