Hi brand new here and to posting to forums so please forgive any mistakes ahead of time! I’ll get right to it. My elderly father inherited a LARGE collection of pennies from a CRH many years ago. The collection is in various states of sorting. It all has to be verified and gone through. Although my Dad has interest his health isn’t such that really permits him CRH. I enjoy the thrill of “the hunt” so I’ve started the CRH. I found something I believe. But I have very little knowledge about errors. I’ve done a bunch of online reading so I know some of the more obvious errors to look for when CRH. I’m going to let the photos I have taken do most of the talking about this penny I have found. All I can say is it appears to me to have not been struck correctly when minted. Causing the year and possibly the mint mark, if one would’ve been present to be imprinted. Along with other damage. The sides are thin in those places where damage is, photos don’t show it very well, sorry. No I don’t have a scale, yet! Lastly I’ll apologize for lack of microscope photos. Any input on exactly what this penny is to educate me would be greatly appreciated! Also any tips on telling the difference between actual errors and PMD would be great! I have two pennies I believe are PMD but I’m not 100% sure? Thank you in advance for your help!
Hi. Welcome to CoinTalk. Unfortunately that looks like sime sort of old PMD - Post Mint Damage. Not a Mint Error of any Kind.
Okay I was pretty sure it was mint damage because of the way the rim up by the “In God We Trust” is, it almost looks like part of the outer rim when it was struck is laying on top there? Plus if you look closely the letter E isn’t all there on the back nor is all the bottom of the “leaf” on lower left. But again PMD or error when struck?
Welcome to CT and good luck on your hunt @Lookin 4 pot of gold. The coin you have posted is most definitely PMD and I seldom state definite. Notice how the coin is out of round at the damaged area. No way that happened in the minting process. Other opinions?
My opinion is the same for post mint damage. All the damage to your coin happened after it left the mint. Circulation damage is another way of saying it. Your coin no longer has any numismatic value at all. IMO.
I just came across 2 very thin pennies. one from 1953 and one from 1961. can't find any info online about them. can anyone help?
Hello.. Welcome to CoinTalk. you will need to start a new separate thread. Pictures are needed to determine what happened to your coins.
