    Hi all,

Been collecting about 10 years now. Stared with walking halves but quickly caught the type set bug. Bought a Dansco 7070 and over the next 5 years or so completed it.

Was a nice accomplishment but one thing I learned from it was "quality of quantity." Starting out, I was just happy to have these cool old coins...I think like most new collectors. As time went on and I came closer to completing my 7070 I started to look back at my early purchases and found I really regretted a lot of them.

That led me onto a graded type set. I liked the idea becuase I could make the set what I want, and include some varieties that were left out from the 7070. I have been working on this set the last few years, but with the lack of shows due to COVID, my collecting has also slowed. More recently while looking at some of my graded type coins, I realized I dont really care for all of the designs and was only collecting them to "fill a hole." They are nice coins in high condition, but they just don't do it for me.

When looking through all my coins, the ones I have always come back to where standing liberty quarters. Its such a beautiful design, intricate, and I enjoy both sides of the coin, not just one. I have always liked the T1 over the T2 or T3 so that got me to thinking.

I only have 2 in my whole collection. Both in about F condition sitting in my 7070. I decided that I was going to put the type set on pause and take some time to really focus on a coin I truely enjoy. That is how I decided to start my SLQ grading set....specifically 1917 T1. Its by far my favorite design and relatively affordable until you hit mid MS grades.

I have been doing a lot of reading and a lot more looking at coins. Learning how to grade these coins, what features to look for, strike characteristics, etc..

I have no preference TPG wise so basically went with whoever I bought my first coin from which happened to be NGC. I am looking at others as well though and can always cross later to have them all in like holders.

My first coin was a F12. Nice detail in the shield and drapery. Stars and motto still a bit weak. Eagle has some nice detail, with a lot of wear on the most raised areas of the wings and breast.

My second coin which I found only a few days later was a F15. A bit more detail in the shield and drapery, eagle still heavily worn.

My third, which isn't graded on purpose is raw and very well worn. I grade it FR02 to AG3 right now. No date, still some detail in the shield. Eagle and most of reverse worn pretty flat. I paid spot for this on ebay and plan to keep it in my pocket until it hits...what I think to be P01. Not many graded out there, so I figure I will need to make my own. May take some time and I may miss the mark, but for melt it's no big loss.

I will post more as I buy them. The end goal of P01-MS63/64 depending on funds. I dont see myself being able to afford higher. Atleast not for the near future.

Thanks for looking. Please comment/review my choices. Let me know if you think I did well or not. You won't hurt my feelings. This is a learning journey for me so the more I learn along the way the better!

Good job! I only have three type 1 quarters, all cherrypicked from SLQ junk trays. Have not heard of someone making a date set by grades yet so congrats on being creative with your set.

SLQ's are actually a very underrated design. In MS grades they usually have good luster, you just gotta focus on the strike quality. I actually just bought a 1928-D in MS64 last weekend and it's one of my favorite coins. I would try to make a set of them if they weren't so darn expensive.

Good luck with the rest of your set, hopefully someday soon you will save up and buy the big one. 1917 is a great year for SLQs.

    Nice coin, and thank you!

I actually got the idea from listening to the Coin Show Podcast @mikenoodle @LostDutchman . They have discussed them a couple times and always toyed with the idea but I could never settle on the right coin.

Strike can be super deceptive on these. It seems many were unevenly struck. So you see many in MS grades with mushy details in various parts of the design such as the shield, head, toes and drapery. Ive seen several labeled as FH with other mushy design elements which shows FH doesnt mean perfect.

Love this post! I too am doing a graded type set, but for first year coins. I had to settle for 2nd year for SLQs for obvious reasons. I got a 1917 Type 1 PCGS AU58FH CAC. I too love SLQs and this idea. I remember that episode of the Coin Show podcast where they mentioned this, and it piqued my interest. I may copy you! :)

First year type is tough! Would love to see the 58 FH.

I have my eye on some lower end coins right now...G8. VG10 and FR02. Unfortunately the 8 and 2 are in PCGS/ANACS, so would require crossover. We will see what happens.

This is a great post. Although my first love is WW2 Mercury Dimes, a close second is the gorgeous Standing Liberty Quarter. I had a type two 1917-P, that I bought 40 years ago. At the time, ANACS consistently graded it 64/64 FH, but I knew it was better. PCGS gave me a correct (IMHO) 65FH. I later bought a PCGS 65 FH 1917-P type one to compliment it. Love that coin and, I would be remiss to say, I love the bare breast. LOL. They would never be able to do this in today's world.

It is a beautiful design. And the only coin I have debated trying to do a date/mm set of.

I would like a 65FH but out of my price range currently.

My youngest son and me started with a Whitman album and G-VG focus on raw coins. That was a few years back, now he's getting toward the end of his undergrad degree. Our best find was a 1916 in a lot of 80 plus quarters from a consignment shop for $4.70 each, and our most expensive purchase was our 1923-S, Corroded & Cleaned for almost $500 after some negotiation. I decided to move the set to slabs because we bought some, but we still have albums going too, and now a higher grade set of slabs and maybe a lower. Lots of lower end dupes. My current favorite is the 1929 MS63 Full Head I got for $125 raw at a local online auction. The ones in ICG slabs are mostly ones I purchased raw (but not the 1923S). Do not have the 1918S/17 overstrike. Here's the current complete slabbed set. 16to24.JPG 24dtomedal.JPG

I have a 64 type 1 in my 7070. I'll see if I can get pics. I've been thinking of doing what you are doing buy with the 21 peace dollar.

I saw your post about the full set. This is the only coin design I have debated doing the full date/mm run with. All the others, a single example is enough for me. Nice accomplishment and nice find on the 1916!

Would love to see the coin!

21 Peace would be very cool. While I like the design, my problem has always been the hair detail. It is very hard to find then well struck and you pay a nice premium when they are.

I think the toughest part if grading sets is choosing a coin you can find in all grades and already graded. While not a requirement. To buy raw and then pay for stabbing adds a significant cost that I would like to avoid.

I have a Morgan in mind I may work on concurrently with this. I also like Walkers. The problem with walkers is the common ones only get graded in MS and the ones that are graded across the board are the super expencive issues like the 21. This means I would probably have to go the stabbing route. We will see.

Been a while since posting. Life has been taking priority and I've spent little time on coins.

I did snag the next coin for the set recently for a good price.

I dont have a large budget at the moment so I have been trying to focus on the lower end of the set. This issue i am having is finding the low end coins for reasonable prices.

I get that most low end coins are worth less than the grading fees. This leads to people charging more to just cover their cost making the hunt hard without over paying.

There is a nice NGC G4 I found, but asking price is $50 which is just crazy. But at the same time, I've yet to see another for sale anywhere. I know i am not crazy because the coin has been fir sale for weeks with no takers.

So I get it, but I am patient. I am willing to overpay a but, but not that much. I will find my deal eventually.

    Vertigo Did someone say bust?

Somewhere on here there is a guy with either 80s or 81s rattler Morgan grading set. I can't remember when I saw it but it had to be a couple years ago now.
