1917 Inverted Double-Struck Penny or "Kissing Lincolns" error

Well, apparently my penny book is missing a slot for this one.

Sunday on the Simpsons, Homer and Bart take up coin collecting. They think they've filled the last hole in their US Coin Album with an 1863 Confederate Half Dime when they realize there was another page dedicated solely to the 1917 Inverted Double-Struck Penny or "Kissing Lincolns". After giving up trying to find it from circulation they attempt to buy it at an auction where Mr. Burns wins it for $10,000,000.

Of course we know the huge gapping flaw in this episode is that why would you put a fictional confederate half dime in a United States Coin Album.

According to the show, this penny was accidentally struck when a brief glimpse of a women's ankle bracelet caused three days of rioting at the Philadelphia Mint.

I saw that episode and laughed at the comment about coin collecting as being a great way to waste your time doing 'nothing'. I loved they way they filled and entire type set book out of pocket change - except that double kissing penny of course. The end comment 'well, now that we've filled the book, now what?" Answer - you put it on the shelf and never look at it again. :)

Much closer to the truth than I'd like to admit lol... though I'd still look at it from time to time.

After all, isn't that what collecting coins, or anything else for that matter, is all about? I suppose there's pride of ownership and having interesting things to look at it, but it all boils down to a time-killer in the end. Still at least you have something of substance when you're done to show for the time... unlike other ways of killing time, like watching TV...

but will it still work in a gum ball machine? OOPPPS. Showing my age. Gum ball machines probably are .25 by now.

Unbelievably, 50¢, 75¢, and $1 machines are becoming very common.

I just now got around to watching this episode. (Taped it while I was gone to NYC and parts north.)

I liked Homer's quote: "Son, coin collecting's a lot like life. It stopped being fun a long time ago."

    God, I love this show!

Yebbut in all defense the gumballs are becoming bigger. Except now some of those things look just like jawbreakers but you can't tell until you bite down into one and almost break your teeth! :D
