I'm starting to build a set of poor-good mercury dime set and while I was out yesterday I came across these 2 first year for $3 each which isn't bad in my opinion. I put the Philly under the scope first and thought huh that kind of looks like a faint D but why would it be so worn down when other devices aren't then logic set in and screamed hey you it's pareidolia lol. I was hoping so much that it was that I seen it. I've already got a bunch that I need to start putting in a book and it's a work in progress. Of course the 16-D will be a tough one because I am on a budget so when I fill the rest I'll start saving for it. Anyone have a 16-D they want to share so I can be envious :D WIN_20240822_16_55_52_Pro.jpg WIN_20240822_16_58_38_Pro.jpg WIN_20240822_16_58_16_Pro.jpg WIN_20240822_16_58_59_Pro.jpg WIN_20240822_16_59_09_Pro.jpg

I kid you not. I buy coins from a fellow I know that buys abandoned storage houses and he calls me with cups, containers or baggies of coins from time to time. A year or so back we traded on one such bag and as I plundered it, I found a 1916 Merc with a mintmark so worn into the rim that it was unidentifiable. I even spent the money to send it in but the dime came back in a body bag. I finally gave that dime to my buddy that runs an LCS and told him to give it to some deserving youngster building a set and tell him that just maybe….. If I still had it I would sure send it your way.

That's certainly kind of you @Randy Abercrombie. We just had a new grandbaby just turned 1yo, he's the sixth grandbaby to be born and it made me realize time ain't slowing down and I want to pass on something to all of them while I still can. As they grow I hope I can get them to love the hobby and not just go hock it at the pawn or local store like I personally seen people do over time.

Here’s my worn but Recognizable 1921-D and 1921-S.

And here’s that difficult and expensive, even in low grade 1916-D.

It’s well worn into the rim but clearly a D. Hope you get one. This is my third one and they are all in sets.

Note: Today a worn 1916-D as I posted above in AG-3 is now going for a minimum price of $500.00.

The price was right and I needed them to fill my folders. It was a good investment over the years. Lol

I can't tell a good lie to my wife. When she asks me if I did something, I always ask why. That indicates that I'm fibbing I guess....

Now, now, be nice. If I had photos of all 3 I’d post them for you. :)

    Edited to correct spelling.

Gawd that thread went on for 25 pages. I'll never get that 15 minutes back.

I only scanned through it to see if the OP ever came back with actual evidence and even that took 15 minutes. The most commented nonsense I think I've ever seen on a coin forum.
