1913 Wheat Cent - Matte Proof Strike??

Is this 1913 Wheat cent a matte proof strike?

The inner and outer rim are very square and the devices are sharp and pop out.

Wheat cents in the teen years seem to have a strong strike in general.

But, the fields appear to be matte on this one.

Also, any thoughts on a grade?

    Thanks in advance!

This coin looks familiar... When it comes to matte proof lincolns, the shoulder doesnt lie. With business strikes the planchets hit each other leaving marks and scratches on one another. With matte proofs the planchets never touched each other. Most of the time planchet dings would still be visiable on the shoulder of Lincoln after the strike. Matte proofs will have a shoulder free of planchet marks.

I cant tell about markers based on the op picture but im gonna say based on the finned and squared off rim and the apparent "clean" shoulder that this is a matte proof. I could be wrong (wouldnt be the first time) but the coin does look familiar or atleast the color is similar to a matte proof I have seen recently.

most coins that people post asking this question are not even close.

This one could be , but should be authenticated.

Does not look like proof to me as proof coins are frosted

Are my eyes deceiving me, or is that 1837 Tortoise, with a cargo on it's back, only privy to two (2) legs ?!

I agree with heavy as the rims certainly look like a matte proof strike.:woot:

The rims are usually the best diagnostic

From what I read, there's a die polish mark through G and above O in GOD.

    I think I see it.

Based on what I've read here and on my observations, I'll submit this to NGC.

There were only 2,983 matte proofs for 1913 minted... but I guess we'll see.

Looks right to me, but the jury's out until NGC gives the word.

Go through the PCGS CoinFacts Images. It looks like there were multiple die pairs making these, but several pictures have a diagonal scratch downward from the upper part of the curve of the D in GOD into the field. I think I see that on your coin, but not sure. Also I think the scratch from the top right of the 2nd T in TRUST into the rim is present on both your coin and many CoinFacts coins.

I saw those as well and find the break in the rim at 11 o’clock on the obverse interesting.

I also see the other die markers that have been mentioned.

    Fun coin!

I saw them, too, but from the pics, I'm going to chalk them up as being black spots, especially since there are spots elsewhere on the coin. A differently lit picture will probably show them as such.

I would like to see the edge from the edge. It looks like chamfer ( business strike) to me at this point. Jim
