I'm not a gold guy but my girlfriend had this and I wanted opinions if it is real. From the internet I am getting that it's .48375 Oz and with a melt value of $634.49. Her grandmother gave it to her and I wanted to make sure it wasn't counterfeit. They made a necklace out of it so I don't think it's worth much beyond melt. Opinions would be great. Yes, it's real. It's also a genuine coin.

Would it have any worth beyond melt?

If it was not damaged putting it in or taking it out of the bezel, $900?

As an ex-jewelry piece probably just melt.

That's what I figured. With the gold chain I'm guessing about $700-750 melt.

I collect the $2.50 Quarter Indian Head Eagles so I'm not quite up on the Eagles but here is what I do know or think I know. President T. Roosevelt wanted to revive American coinage during the early 1900's so he had Augustus Saint-Gaudens redesign the coin. Saint-Gaudens redesigned the $10 Gold Eagle using the same Liberty Head design dating back to 1840. The new $10 Eagle would feature an obverse portrait of Miss Liberty wearing a Native American style headdress. The reverse is an American bald eagle standing on arrows surrounded by an olive branch.

There would be three types of 1907 $10 gold eagle coins, with two types ranking as quite rare:
    • Type 1-1907, 500 minted, wire rim with periods – $18,000
    • Type 2-1907, 40 known to exist, rounded rim, periods before and after E PLURIBUS UNUM - $56,000
    • Type 3-1907, 239,406, no periods – $800
    You have Type 3.
Melt Value-$634.87 at today's current market price
    Metal Content-0.48375 oz
    Face Value-$10.00 USD
    Mintage-239,946
    Issuing Mint-U.S. Mint-Philadelphia
    Year Issued-1907

I believe you'd find that the market value for the coin, 14kt chain/holder would currently be ~$800, but many believe much more. Who Knows?

I have several myself with the various U.S. Gold coin denominations, which I believe to be a good investment, especially when the individual components generally are sold for more than the assembly.

 :banghead::banghead: :stop: I deleted all the previous post EXCEPT the part that is relevant to the OP's COIN & QUESTION. Nothing.:D

The Redbook shows a mintage of 1,203,899 $10 Liberty coins

If her grandmother gave it to her, there's probably more than dollars and cents involved here.:) It's a nice piece.

She's going to hang on to it, which is good. I just didn't want her to get excited over something that was counterfeit. Thanks for the feed back everyone.

Maybe the REDBOOK is incorrect. Both usacoinbook.com and coinvalues.com agree on the mintage I quoted. Oh, and an article in Coin Week also quotes the same mintage figure 239,946. ;)

Thanks for the correction. I mistakenly thought the coin in the OP was a $10 Liberty!:D

It was, until Augustus Saint-Gaudens redesigned it with Miss Liberty wearing a Native American style headdress. :);)

:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: THAT'S MY POINT! Why post info on $10 Indians, and how many were made. :sorry: But what's it doing on this thread?

I collect nickels so I'm not quite up on the Eagles but here is what I do know or think I know. The Redbook lists two varieties of 1913 Buffalo nickels. Get it? :);)

Ok, now the women wants a silver coin necklace. I was thinking of getting her a Walker. Anyone think that would be a good choice?
