Can anyone tell if this is a fake? I bought it while on business in afghanistan. That alone should give me a hint, but I have to verify it is before I try to sell it.
WOW! I didn't know there was a demand to counterfeit silver eagles. And a date of 1906???? Strange....
I didn't know the Afghans had time machines. The basic design of the obverse was created for the half dollar ten years later than the coin's "date", and the Dollar-size use of that design commenced in 1986.
Yep, its definitely a fake. I have seem more counterfeits with the ASE design floating around recently.
Here is a webpage all about it. It is definetly a fake. Still, might be silver. That's very Questionable to though. Still, something diff. for your collection. http://www.silver-coins.org/american_eagle_dollar.html Phoenix
After comparing it to one of my silver eagles, there's something about the outstretched arm that doesn't look quite right to me. Not to mention the ridiculous date on the coin.
Aw, c'mon Other Frank. Take another look at the website Pheonix21 posted, and think about the geographical relationship between Afghanistan and the counterfeit factories of the People's Republic of China
That was my first impression... someone took a 1986 ASE, changed the "8" to a "0", then sandblasted the whole thing to make it look old. How does it compare to an ASE - measurements wise ? Talking about weight, diameter, thickness.
Lord, it's not even a question it's fake. Not real, no way, no how, 100% certain. Some fakes are hard to tell, that's about as obvious as they come (though I have seen worse).
Fake 1906 silver eagles coming out of china have been well known for years. Odds are better than 99.999% that it is a fake.
