Recently came across this coin but can’t seem to find any info on it. Anybody have any thoughts on it? Value? Thx
The silver eagle was designed by an engraver named John Mercanti. His initials are missing on the reverse side. Also, he wasn't born yet in 1902.
Welcome to CT. It's on the reverse. 1 silver ounce and the one dollar is a false value. It's worth the spot price of silver per ounce minus the fees the buyer will charge. At today's price that around $14.00 or higher.
It's kinda like when someone that doesn't speak or read chinese gets a tattoo of some chinese words, they're misspelled but they don't know any better.
All you had to do was go on-line and google a 1902 silver dollar and you wouldn't have come up with anything since it is completely bogus. Welcome to CT, but do your homework first.
True, but every time I post this advice: "Google is your friend" in my stamp/railroad threads the trolls amass and I'm a hater... Too easy to have us folks here, do the work it seems. Day after day: "Get the Redbook", ad nauseum...
Sorry that I offended some of you with my post. But in case you missed it, I did specifically state “can’t seem to find any info on it.” Was that too vague?? I don’t consider myself a coin expert and I did try google, and THAT IS precisely the reason I came to this forum. I mean, do all new threads really need to start off by saying “I already tried google, I already did my homework”??? C’mon, that’s just childish. If you don’t care to help out with constructive information, then just skip the thread and move on...geez
OOPS! I mispoke. These things are dated 1906 and 1908. Here they are, truly ahead of their time, fresh off the HG Wells time machine. Who knew back then that this design would be re-used starting in 1986?
It would be great to see a new thread, "Fantasy Coins" to see what other similar but yet interesting replicas are out there.
The difference is these are not fantasy or replica coins. These are counterfeit coins worth nothing, being sold with the intent to deceive as real coins.
