This one resides in a PCGS questionable color holder. Probably overpaid at $95, but it looked good to me.
What do you think? Try NGC? At worst, this will end up in my raw type set. Has anyone had luck cracking out "altered color" and resubmitting?

I don't know this series very well, but it is one of my favorite copper designs. If it's already in a PCGS holder, why would you want to crack it out? I myself prefer NGC, but you can't go wrong with PCSG either. Unless you think it will upgrade, I'd either leave it right where it's at or if you want, put it in a Dansco.

That is one nice looking Indian head. As for the color, I have no idea, but I do know I like it!

Looks like a very nice native American head cent to me !

I like it , to me that's all that matters . I have an 1863 that I bought at Harlan Berks . I noticed it in the tray in the window as I was walking in . They said cleaned . Maybe but it has some of the best luster, clean fields and great strike that I've seen in an early nickel IHC . It's still one of my favorite coins and the fact I paid less than $100 for it is just gravy . Love your coin .

I feel you will get the same opinion from NGC. I would leave it in the PCGS holder but that's me.

I've cracked out several QC coins that I believed to be NT. I was successful in nearly every case. Some took more than one re-submittal.

I see nothing in your photo that looks questionable.

Because he is hoping to get rid of the "Questionable color" label and get it slabbed as problem free. Which if successful will greatly raise the value and marketability.

I have a feeling if they even have the slightest question , they'll QC the coin . They'll error on the side of caution . But I do agree with most of the QC coins that were in that auction . Yours and maybe 2 others I'd question . Too bad about that AU Flying eagle , would have been a nice coin if the color was ok .

    RedRaider -

Did you buy the coin because you like it and wanted it for your collection, or because you were hoping for a flip opportunity if you could get it graded ? I'm asking because your answer kind of determines what might be worth trying, or not trying.

Looking at Heritage MS65 RB examples are bringing between $120-$160 for the most part. MS65 RD examples $400-$650. And since you've already got $100 in the coin, hoping for a minimum 65 RD is the only option that would make re-submission worth the cost.

But looking at the coin I'd say it's a borderline RB as it is, assuming the color was found acceptable. But since they have already rejected it once, and since none of the examples I can find have even remotely similar coloring, then the odds of it being found acceptable and graded are quite low I would think.

That said, if your desire is to just get the coin into a problem free slab, if you were to crack the coin out and leave it exposed to the air for a couple of weeks to a month, then I believe the coloring would tone down a bit and look more natural, and probably be acceptable.

This means to me that a flip opportunity just isn't there, unless you are just willing to gamble on low odds. But if you like the coin for what it is, as it is, then all is good.

This was bought to replace the AU Indian head cent example in my Dansco type album. I thought it was a very attractive coin (maybe altered color, maybe not), but either way it will be cracked out of the current PCGS holder and placed in my Dansco.

For $95, there was not much to gamble on for a resubmission.....it would have to grade 64RD, 65RD, 66RB for me to make money on it. (I doubt it would ever grade full red, as there is toning around the edges) I did take that in to account when I bid, but the intention was not to try to upgrade and flip.

Looks okay to me - crack it out and add it to the album.
