Here is a 1901 Cent I purchased today. It has a full LIBERTY and some fairly nice detail but it has a few marks on it and the denticles are completly missing in some places and broken in others. The reverse has very light denticles all the way around. I was just wondering what you all thought and if any one had any idea as to the value. The pics are not to great sorry.
It looks like the collar was broken on that die, it is a very nice error and worth a few bucks. Several bucks. I'll do some research and get back to you.
Thanks, I have about 120 new IH to look through. Went to the local Flea Market this morning at 6:30 and bought a few odds and ends and decided to go to another one down the road (found nothing there). On my way home I stoped back and was talking to one of the regular sellers and he said he bought a bag of IH for $25 and was selling them for 50 cents each. The bag had over 450 coins. I only had 60 bucks on me so I picked out 120 and he even threw in a few extras. I got 57 from 1880 - 1899, 11 1909 coins, a 1864, 1865, 1867 1871 and 1873 the rest were fromm 1900 - 1908 several with full LIBERTYs. It was pretty late in the day so I did not have time to go back and get the rest but I know where I will be first thing Sat. morning. The worst thing is I know I was the second to go through them because another guy showed me an 1908 S he got and said he got several from the 70's. Don't know why he did not buy more. Here are a few picks of some of them. For some reason pics make them look grainy.
Twice I typed a reply here and hit submit and the server quit. Anyways, I can't find my error id book, nor any info online. Maybe Mike D. will see this thread. I did find his error/variety list online, by googling 'broken collar coin' Could you post a pic of the reverse and the rim?
Here are some pics of the back. Thought I posted one but I see I did not. The coin has pretty nice color even though it does not show in the pics. Thanks again
That looks like a good possibility. And it would explain the wierd reeding on the edge, it's a design from the holder.
Actually the die used to press the cent in the holder caused the damage. Sorry I didn't have better news.
It is the same size. I thought maybe that was a possibility with the encased cent theory, but Why are the denticles completly smooth and do not show ant signs of ever being pressed. Thanks for all the info
where is this flea market? Indian heads are my favorite coins, I have a few, but for some reason I have a hard time finding them. If you ever find a good deal like that again, buy some for me and i will pay you for them. If you dont mind. please (PM) me if you want to talk about it. thanks--BILL
Ldhair is right on the money. The cent was damaged as it was placed in and then removed from an encasement. Thanks, Bill
Thanks for all the help. I agree with you all it was encased at some point. Went back this weekend and the guy had sold the rest but he kept out a few he thought was to dirty to sell and an 1860 because it was thicker than the rest. He said I could just have them but I gave him $8.00 and told him if he runs across any more coins or tokens to keep me in mind. He was very happy with the $8 and said he would hold anything coin related he gets back until I have achance to look at it and make an offer. Thanks again for all the help.
