Still another find from my coin hunts in the silver melter/silversmith shops here in the Philippines. I think its genuine, how would you grade it and how much is it worth. In my eyes its a VF-20, am I right ? thanks
Is that what its called ? you're probably right as the wear on the head wreath and the letters "liberty" isn't quite a VF- 20 although a touch better than F-12. So if I look at the catalog it's worth approximately $200. Not bad Thanks a lot.
See that line around the outer edge of the rim ? That shouldn't be there - it can often indicate a counterfeit. I would have this coin looked at more closely in person by someone who is familiar with them.
There's actually no line there. That's an optical illusion due to the angle of the shot showing the reflection on the smooth worn edge. Here's a shot of that smooth reflective edge.
I have a suggest...you might want to say away from that kind of shops to buy coins from...they sound like Pawn Shops over here and that is always a good place to get fakes and stolen items. Speedy
Thanks for the concern but I only go to those shops occassionally as they aren't my only source of coins here. They're different from pawnshops as we also have those here. They're actually jewellers who buy these coins(usually at bullion value) and scrap gold and silver(broken jewelry, spoons etc) to turn those metals into pendants, rings and what have you. By going there I have saved a lot of Spa-Phil and US- Phil coins from being melted and lost forever. As they don't distinguish what they buy as long as it's silver or gold some coins from the US and other countries are thrown into the mix. Buying there is quite cheap but of course, being raw the risk of fakes and stolen items is there. Its also conveniently very near my clinic in the province. With regards to other sources, we have a very active Numismatic and Antiquarian society here where we trade among ourselves and auctions are held every now and then. The hobby shops are also plentiful.
