I am excited to have picked up this coin. I don't often buy outside of ancients anymore these days unless its a coin thats been on my wantlist for awhile and it still is interesting to me. I have a soft spot for Japanese coins and thought this would pair well with my 1895 without the countermark, which is also an MS64. These seem quite scarce in anything Unc. Especially anything higher than MS63. Super excited to add this MS64. Feel free to post your Japanese Yen or any other sweet Japanese coinage you have. Here's my 1895 which pairs well with it.
You already got my comments on that via text message. 'Tis gorgeous. Not that I'd expect anything else, with your stuff.
Lovely pair of Yens! These continue to become more popular and prices have gone up over the last year (I finally picked up my own earlier this year-coming to a box of 20 updated thread soon ). Here is the video: https://www.instagram.com/p/CLfyoADrUNr/
Made me go look up the pic of the one I had. 'Twas a mere AU58, but had pretty good eye appeal. I want another one day.
That's a nice one too @lordmarcovan ! You can still find AUs and some MS examples at decent pricing (they have gone up but not like 1921 Peace Dollars or British Trade Dollars). For how cool of a design it is, I'm surprised it took until mid 2020 for these to start appreciating significantly.
Yes, after I sold that one above and later decided to replace it, I realized I had a bit more on my plate in the quest for a nice MS63-ish piece. Yours is exactly what I'm looking for, but I got sticker shock on the ones I looked at.
I'm in the same boat as you with the British Trade Dollar and Mexican Caballito. I sold mine for modest amounts before the price spike with the thought I would find better examples-no luck so far and with current pricing, they have been put further down the coin priority list.
Haven't got my Caballito yet. (Our thread author @kazuma78 just recently got a monster in that category, too.) I have a Brit Trade dollar, but it's destined for my vestpocket store inventory, as I don't think it's a slab candidate.
In a similar vein, I sold my Chinese Junk dollar and will have a hard time replacing it with one of similar eye appeal (certainly won't be for the price I acquired this one at)... It was PCGS MS62, but with good eye appeal for a 62, in my opinion. (@kazuma78 - got one of these yet? Wanna see it if you do!)
That's an awesome example and one I would also be proud to have (my desired example would either be nicely toned or semi-pl).
Like AU58, I find MS62 to be a good "compromise" grade, which provides lots of bang for the buck. The Junk dollar I posted above is a good example of that. Given my relatively modest budget, I'll probably be shopping for eye-appealing AU58 and/or MS62 coins for my Caballito, Junk dollar, and Brit Trade dollar, when it comes down to it.
I've been mixed on MS 62s and used to prefer AU 58s. I believe some of the old school 58s are now more often being graded as 62s (market graded coin with a hint of rub but not as beat up as you tend to see on something like a low MS Morgan), so that is why we find appealing examples. Then you do just have some 62s which have great luster but a few too many hits/marks to go higher; those can be nice too.
Thats a gorgeous coin too! Very flashy! @lordmarcovan I don't have a Junk dollar, and its not a type on my list. To be honest, I used to want to quest for world crowns, but now I only pick them up if I have a personal tie to them. I did just submit about 8 Chinese crowns that had been cleaned to NGC because some of the types are better ones, so even if they details holder, I'll be really happy because they would be saleable since verifiable and authentic.
By the way, that's an Osaka mint gin countermark, as it's on the left. The Tokyo mint gin countermark is on the right... these are much less common than the Osaka. I have 7 Osaka, but only 2 Tokyo. I'll take a photo of examples tomorrow
Yes, they've gone up a lot in the last year. Previously around Tokyo, you could find high AU for 8000-10,000 yen, but those have doubled or more since the start of the year. MS are from around 25,000yen.
The 25,000 yen MS pieces must be low MS then. Ive seen them sell in ms61/ms62 for that but MS63 and higher seem to bring significantly more than that.
More than 1 year ago: Far left Yr M37, 10,000yen. In the last year: - 2nd from left Yr M36, 15,000yen - 2nd from right Yr M36, 20,000yen. - Far right Yr T3, 30,000yen Judge the condition. All bought on the ground in Tokyo.
These are among some of my favorite types ever produced anywhere - I also have a counterstamped example, but I don't appear to have a photo of it NGC MS 61 NGC MS 64 NGC MS 62
