I just joined the site to ask about my 2013 silver proof sets that came in...but browsing around and looking at some pictures got me wondering about this Morgan my dad gave me back in the late sixties..He said that some casinos in Vegas used to give these out when you hit a jackpot on the slots. I've had it sitting in a drawer since the seventies with some other assorted old coins (oldest being 1946 penny, no mint mark). Anyone know any additional details about casinos giving out Morgans in the sixties? Also, wondering what the grade and value would be ? Unfortunately, I do remember using a pencil eraser to clean it back in elementary school in late 1960s, but not touched often since the seventies. Thanks
Hey Joe, Back in the 60's casinos hoarded bags of silver dollars and used them throughout their daily affairs, as in your case as a jackpot prize. Based off your photos your Morgan resembles a "VG", or a "Very Good." Though it does appear to have been re-toning, this probably will still be considered a "details" grade due to the past cleaning. That said, chances are the value in retail will be a few more dollars above melt. Maybe someone can come around and classify a possible VAM designation, which could possibly bump up the value. -Mike
Thanks Mike, re: vam I see an extra blob (not sure of the proper term - easy to tell the rookies isn't it) on the left side of the lower right leg of the "N' in ONE on the reverse. Can't get a better pic with my camera. I didn't see it on vamworld, but I did see the 'o' mint mark appears to be high and right as in http://www.vamworld.com/1891-O+VAM-11 .
