Here is one coin I have that I am curious how to value. I've included pics below. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. Flatlander
Thanks. I'm new to all this. I wiped it off prior to taking the pics. Otherwise it's been stored in plastic holder in a shoebox for the last 20 years or more. What's the implication of wiping it off and what would the potential value be from what you know about it? Sorry if the questions seem elementary. They probably are. I'm just starting to lean. When I want to get an idea of what a raw coin would sell for I do an ebay's completed listing search. Here's an 1890 korter that recently sold and has also been cleaned but is in worse shape than yours. Item number 360214387461 It sold for $169.00 The problem with wiping is that it can easily leave small scratch marks. From the photos your coin doesn't look horribly cleaned to me and I think it's a nice one with great detail. I don't think you would have any problem selling that for more than the one I posted. (Don't clean anymore coins)
well, you probably cut the value in 1/2. but, on the bright side, you have nice pictures to post to eBay!
That is the case with "problem" coins. Depending on what you paid for it ( if anything ) you may be able to re-sell it on EBAY . In no way am I suggesting you be less than truthful in an item description. It sure does have great details though.
Once again - thanks for all the comments. Do any of you feel it would be worth sending this coin in to NGC or PCGS to have it graded? I feel that if I'm just going to hold it then it wouldn't be worth it. However, if I was considering selling it, do you think it would pay to do so? At least there would be some form of benchmark to judge it by. Again, being new to this game, I'd like your opinion. If it was yours and you decided to sell it (for whatever reason), what would you do with this specific coin (and why)? Would you have it graded? Where would you sell it? Flatlander
well seeing that most people who posted agree it was cleaned probably not worth being sent out for a grade. the details will get you enough to make grading unimportant.
My suggestion is , if you like the coin and don't need money for some emergency , no need to sell! The coin as I have stated before has great detail. Should you decide to submit the coin for grading of course you will have that added cost to your original cost. But this is how the game is played. Sometimes you win and sometimes you loose. You might want to take the coin to a few local dealers, if you still are seeking further opinions before deciding whether or not to submit. *** A special note*** What has not been previously discussed here is the fact that this coin simply by the fact of a mintage of roughly 80,000 pieces, in itself makes it a rarity! So for me, even if I had a "cleaned" specimen I would want to keep it in my collection. Personally, I have no doubt of the coin being Genuine. Would it grade? I don't think so. It might be worth having the coin authenticated though to lay any doubt to rest. Happy Holidays Tom
Shhh, I'm working here. Since we have a wild guess of three hundred and the cleaning killed the value, I'll offer $100. Sorry I had to do that ( I still like the coin)
I don't see this as a problem coin but my guess on price was way high. Link to Heritage. You may have to sign in to see the prices. http://coins.ha.com/common/auction/pricesrealized.php?src=&ID=&optGlobalSearch=&globalSiteDropdown=coins&cboDenomination=Seated+Quarters%3A&cboSaleNo=&txtSearch=1890&cmdSearch=Search+Auction+Archives&hdnSearch=True&txtLotNo=&stage=1
I had not checked Heritage for prices but I can tell you that in circulated grades this issue is more scarce than one would perceive.
