I bought this off of a customer because he's down on his luck and broke. I gave him $12 for it just so he'd have enough to get something to eat. Besides the word Copy on the reverse what says fake to you? Also It weighs 26.65 grams so whomever made it made it within mint tolerance and it is not magnetic I'm thinking it may be silver but don't have a scanner to tell.
Is it the right thickness? I've got a Morgan that's non-magnetic, the right weight, and about 15% thicker than it should be. I suspect mine is silver-plated copper.
Visually it's the same as any other Morgan. The reason I ask about this coin is because what the guy told me was the person he got it from said he thought it was a counterfeit so to keep him out of trouble he counterstamped copy on it. It's not a valuable coin by any means. Just curious if anyone seen anything that I should pay attention too in case I go to buy one that doesn't have copy on it because to me everything checks out. The one thing I didn't do is a rare earth magnet test cause I lost mine and need to get another.
The word COPY looks like it's raised, not incuse. That would have to mean it was stamped into the die, not onto the coin. Also, if it were counterstamped onto the coin, there'd be a raised area on the other face. Either the guy you bought it from or the guy he got it from was lying.
Your right and at some point you'd think that I'd thought of that considering I have had many counterstamped coins.
The denticles look right, the design looks right the size and weight checks out , it's not magnetic. The last line of defense is the rare earth magnet but if I was out and didn't have one in my pocket I'd be scared to buy any Morgans from IE a flea market. I'm going to have to learn more about this series because if it didn't say copy I'd been fooled.
Just because somebody stamped COPY on the coin because they feared it was counterfeit doesn't mean it actually is counterfeit. It looks genuine to me, from the pictures.
40+ years of experience in the coin/bullion industry. You get to know when something isn't silver or real.
Without COPY on it, I'd think it's just another circulated dollar. Maybe it's a Chinese fake sampler.
I’m sure you’re a nice person and all? But, I’m not exactly sure what you’re expecting us to say? It’s obviously fake and not silver. What more do you need to know?
