My grandfather just gave me this gold coin and I would like to know what it is. I searched and found nothing.

It is a .9999 1/2 troy oz coin with the fire from statue of liberty on the back and the actual face of the statue on the front. It says 1886 centennial 1986. The coin is 100% mint condition and is in a protective sleeve.

What is this coin and how much is it worth?

    cheers,

The piece is not a coin, but, rather, a commemorative token issued for the centennial.
As far as value, it is generally about melt for gold, in this instance 1/2 ounce of pure.

It was issued by some private concern, probably as a fund-raiser, not by the U.S. Mint.

Thank you! So the "token" is only worth its weight in gold then? I guess I should not be complaining, gold is worth a lot right now!

    Thanks!
