Hey VAM Folks, I sure need some help identifying the VAM of an 1879-CC/CC Morgan Silver Dollar that I picked up today and a value if possible! I will try to post some pictures at a later time but for time being, I will try to describe the CC/CC Mint Mark. The Primary Mint Mark is definitely a Large type with another (Secondary) Mint Mark which is apparently the Small type underneath and positioned a little NorthNortheast of the Primary. Is there a difference between this over Mint Mark Variety and the "Capped CC" Variety or are they the same? For determining a possible value on the coin, the coin is a high VF grade and has a very strong strike and has toned to a light steel gray with some slight luster still showing! Any help would be appreciated! Also, I will post some information on a couple more Morgans with VAMs in the "What's it Worth" Forum to try to get a value on these as well. Thanks...Frank
The 1879-CC VAM 3 is called the "Capped Die". It has a smaller CC under a larger CC mint mark. Try to get a close-up picture of the mint mark. The only other thing close for the 79-CC is the VAM 4. It has a doubled second C on the left inside. The VAM 3 also has a double 18 on top and a slightly doubled 9 at the bottom. Some specimens have filled G in GOD. It's a TOP 100 coin. My value sheet is outdated. The last list I have shows F15 at $180, VF35 at $400, and XF45 at $475.
nesvt, Thanks for the information! Mine is apparently a VAM 3 as there is some slight doubling at the top of the "18" in the Date but I will have to take a closer look at the "9". Thanks...Frank
