I am searching for an 1869 overdate Indian head cent. Looking at eBay photos, it is difficult to tell if some of these coins are actually overdates. Can anyone educate me on how to determine the authenticity of these coins?
According to the Cherry Picker's guide you may be seeking the RPD-003 variety. This variety was once considered an 1869/8 overdate, but it has since been determined that it is simply a re-punched date. Still there's a lot of demand for this variety since it is included as a type in many retail albums. It still commands a $200-300 dollar premium over non-repunched examples in the same grade. Basic description for RPD-003 according to the Cherry Picker's Guide: "Secondary digits are evident to the northeast of the 6 and the 9, with a spread stronger on the 9 than the 6." Then there's also an RPD-001 for the 1869 IHC. "Secondary digits are visible to the north of the 1 and the 8, with a spread stronger on the 1 than the 8." Tough to visualize without photos, but hope this helps.
i wouldn't buy one of those unattributed if I couldn't inspect it with a loupe. Way too much crap on the bay.
The 1869 "overdates" I've been seeing on the bay look sort of like they might be genuine, but it is hard to tell for sure. I want one I know is genuine. I suppose I'll have to pay a lot for such a coin.
This might shed some light on the subject. I don't know where I found this picture--perhaps on this forum--and I hope it isn't against the rules to post this picture.
The one you show is the Snow-3 which is a 1869/69 which used to be thought a 1869/8. Besides the features of the date repunch you show, there is also found a die chip on the "I" in UNITED and in Early die state a die chip on the cheek looking like a mole. That is mainly on higher quality EDS. The S-1 ( 1869/186) is easy to spot as it shows 2 separated bottom crossbars of the "1" and is very rare, higher priced than the S-3. The possible rarest one is Breen-1978 which is (1869/69 ) and is hard to see on a medium to low grade coin with good equipment. The S-2 ( 1869/1869) is very rare also, Reounch shows best on the 8. If one gets a 1869 for the price of a normal 1869, I always do it, as wonderful things do happen Jim
Thanks. The 1869 "overdate" is the only coin I still need for my Dansco Indian head cent collection. I just want to make sure it is legitimate. I suppose one will come along sooner or later, and likely I'll have to pay a lot for it.
Like I said on the Coin Community forum there is no actual 69/8 so any of the repunched 69's could be considered "legitimate" as far as I'm concerned.
Any thoughts on this one? Sorry i dont know a thing about coins and stumbled across some and this was in there so i joined this group in hopes of some experienced feedback
Why don't you start your own thread instead of necromancing a 7+ year old thread? And what, exactly, does this have to do with Indian Cents?
Sorry i did realize it worked like that, i just google searched and found this discussion i apologize
It's worth starting a new thread. More folks will see your coin. It looks like a really nice 3 cent silver. Cleaned but still nice. Try to get better images that are in focus. Welcome to CT.
