Best find for me to date (granted only about a month into this coin collecting thing). I have been putting together a book of Lincoln cents with my 7 year old daughter and it has been pretty darn fun. We were searching a plastic bag of wheat pennies for any that we didn't have and this was in there..woo hoo. Don't know what kind of condition it is in or value it might have, but my girl sure got a kick out of it, and so did I. I scanned the coin to get the picture and it really doesn't pick up a lot of the detail that can still be seen. For example the lines on the top of the shield are actually pretty crisp to me, but can hardly be made out in the scan. Now I guess I am going to have to buy a camera. If anyone could give me a guess on the condition that would be great. Thanks!
Just wish the picture was larger. If the shield lines are as strong as you say I'd put this one at VF20 or so. Granted the WE in the motto is weak and this does not really conform to a VF coin by ANA standards. IMHO they need to change that. Sharp detail throughout and the 1867 tended to have horrible strikes anyway. Certainly a great find. That's a keeper!
It depends if it is strike or wear on the "We" That ribbon is vernable to wear and the condition of that section is a determing factor. That the guild should do is clarify that the Ribbon is often weakly struck like the breast feathers from a NO Morgan. Ruben
Good point Ruben. I'm going on experience and looking at a lot of Two Cent Pieces. If I see a well struck 1867 and the price is right I'll buy it. Not like I need it. Saw an NGC slabbed MS64 RB at show once with virtually NO WE visible. I haven't devoted my whole life to these and purchased every book available. I've observed over the years.
Nice find. Now you can visit your local bookstore or amazon.com, look for "The Official Red Book" or "Official ANA Grading Standards for US Coins" Both are good basic resources to help in understanding coins.
