Can anyone tell me more about this coin? I know very little about coins in general, but after being pointed towards some places to do some research, I think I've noticed some die errors on this coin. From what I've read, it doesn't look like an 8/9 error that seems to be pretty desirable, but it certainly seems to have other issues. I'm just not sure what that means as far as rarity or value.

Please excuse any dust or lint and any other issues with the photos. I'm using an iPhone and some jury-rigging with some lenses available to me. I think they came out alright for what they are, but they're far from perfect.

Here is the date. The only thing I noticed here is what looks like a double struck 5. Am I right?

Other than that, I wondered if these were anything:

    Vine at top left

    The G in "REGINA"

Bottom of the T in "GRATIA"

    Top of R in "VICTORIA"

    Any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum. I remember this coin from a post on Reddit - same person?

Now that I have a moment, I'll check out my Charlton catalogue to see if I recognize the diagnostics.

I agree with you that the 5 looks doubled. There a bunch of known varieties on the Coins & Canada page for the 1859, including one with a doubled 1 and 5 (where the 5 matches yours) but your coin doesn't have the same doubled 1.

Looks like most of the valuable varieties have some form of doubled 9 - which your coin doesn't have. I might venture a guess of retail value between $15-30 depending on who's bidding.

As for specific die pairings, I might guess that @Bill in Burl might be quicker to the answer than I will be. Maybe not. But it's fun to tag people.

EDIT: I'm seeing what could be a match on page 297 of my Charlton Catalogue - Repunched 5, the missing vine matches your coin. Showing a value multiplier of 10x normal coin ($80 in F, $100 in VF20, $200 in EF40.)

Also, here is a good website for Victorian Cents. I've linked it to the 1859 with repunched 5's page.

HA! Yes. Same person. Someone on Reddit pointed me in this direction to double check for possible rare VAMs on a Morgan Dollar my bro-in-law gave me. I've since realized how valuable a resource these forums (and Reddit) can be and have been attempting a bit of research.

Excellent! Care to offer an opinion on the grade?

Your coin is a "variety", not an error. Many of the early Vickies had R/P'd 5's and ALL of the 9's were fully punched into each die by hand, so EVERY 9 is R/P'd, since it took 2-4 whacks to fully complete the digit.

VF-20+, maybe 30 in hand .. but it has permanent environmental damage. Where the hard flakey green stuff is will be pitting or very darks spots so you really can't give it a grade, other than it's genuine. Nice R/P'd 5. There are a number of different ones. That is not the same coin as on p 297. The 297 has more offset and doubling above the bottom loop and down the vertical portion of the 5. The vine gaps at 7 are also different.
