Hello, This is my first post, hopefully you all can tell me if this is worth anything. My grandfather passed away 2 months ago at 99 years old and we found this money clip. My mother said that my grandfather liked to buy gold coins. I will attach pictures of the money clip. It is attached to the clip, so I cannot get pics of the back. Even if it is not worth much, it has sentimental value....just wanted to know an approximate value. Thank You! Jason
Jason, ! All I could think of when I saw your posting was OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sure that your grandfather meant well and probably did not realize that Kellog & Company Gold Coins are extremely valuable! The coin appears uncirculated even in the belt buckle. You need to have it removed professionally from the belt buckle, placed in something to protect it and have it sent in for Certification, Authentication and Grading. I assume that it is a $20 Gold Piece!? Do not try to clean or polish the coin whatsoever but I may already be too late for that warning. After a second look, it appears that the Obverse may have been wiped or polished but I hope not! If the Reverse and rims of the coin are undamaged and look the same as the Obverse, then it is extremely valuable, if in fact it is genuine and I see nothing to steer me to say otherwise. Frank
Jester, welcome to CT. I can't tell you what it is worth, but it sure looks nice. I want to go out and get one now! Looks like the coin may not be real, but wait until a more experienced person gets on. They can tell you more definitely.
Due to the rarity I am going to assume it is a fake and a damn good one. Even back then I would be highly surprised that someone would put a real Kellogg co gold 20 in a money clip.
Wow thats a very pretty coin. I would love to have it in my collection. But I think its a fake. One of the best fakes I've seen. The stars have small holes in the middle of them on your coin but the three I looked up on the net do not. Also the hair on the top of the head on your coin is in even equaldistant lines. On the ones on the net they are in pairs with spaces in between. That said, I still think your coin has collectible value to counterfit collectors and should also be tested to see if it is gold and what the fineness of the gold is. It's a real beauty. I would keep it as something special from my grandfather. Good Luck!! P.S. I'm not the most knowledgable person on older gold coins. You should contact one of the major grading companies to have them take a look. It couldn't hurt.
Even if it isn't real , it's still a kool memento of your grandpa , but to be sure have it checked by a repubatle dealer . rzage
Thank you everyone for all of your input! I really appreciate your thoughts and the link to a real one. I will enjoy it as it is. As a side note, I have never collected coins, but this money clip (although apparently not real) and looking around at this forum and other coin sites has really gotten me interested in coin collecting! Maybe i should look for another thread on this subject, but just curious as to any tips to get started in coin collecting (any sites, or ways to find cool coins (besides looking through my coin jar). Thanks again for all your input! Jason

Hi, I agree it is a nice family momento. I do have problems with the chin/ throat area, the stars and the date numerals, especially the "5". I am pretty sure it is a reproduction, but I would certainly have been happy if my Grandpa had left me such a piece. Jim
Not trying to rain on anyones parade but I do recall these being mass produced sometime ago by some outfit. I don't remember the name of the operation though. But for the most part they are bronze. just take a look at this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-BRONZE-1854-KELLOGG-CO-COIN-SILVER-MONEY-CLIP_W0QQitemZ190255044427QQihZ009QQcategoryZ10296QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Jason, It is really hard to make a call as to what to do concerning the coin in the belt buckle without having it in hand! If I thought that there is a possibility that it may be real, then I would have it removed from the belt buckle and sent in for Certification, Authentication and Grading. If it is real and you sold the coin, you could start collecting just about any Type and Series of coins that you wish! As far as collecting, go to a Book Store and pickup some Coin Collecting books, pricing Magazines and the Red Book on U.S. Coins. Look through and read these and pick the Types and Series that you might want to collect. If you find a coin or coins that you want, you can always post a question about them here on Coin Talk for help. Frank
It appears to be a die struck piece created for jewellry in the early part of the 20th century, perhaps associated with the Panama-Pacific Expo in 1915 when a lot of "Pioneer" pieces were resurrected for uses in jewellry and souvenirs. I myself have a replica of a Wass Molitor $50 that was a commemorative of the gold rush and was sold at the Panama Pacific Expo. But while your piece is not worth as much as an original, it does have value as a collectable still nowadays.
Welcome, Jason ! I hope you enjoy this board. My condolences to you and your family. I would say 99.9% chance that it's a replica.
I concur, and not a particularly convincing one at that. I seriously doubt that it was created to fool anyone, it was intentionally made as a replica for sale in clips lke yours. While I guess it is possible that it is gold I would be absolutely shocked if it was.
Hi. Hey, my grandfather had the same money clip. I dont think the coin detaches. i recall asking my grandfather and he told me his dad brought it to him when he was in the war. So there must be a few of them out there. I saw one on ebay that real similar to yours and it was going for 6 dollars. If you find out anything please let me know. Thanks, Ashley.
I Have one of these . Ialso wondered if it was real . after seeing your post i;m gonna go with the thought that its a fake . got mine from my dad so same as you i'll just keep it as a momento . its still real cool .
