Here’s an 1853 Arrows Half Dime I just received in the mail . Sellers photos were less than great so I took a bit of a chance on this one. These photos are mine. I paid $46…how do you think I did?

It's Common date but I buy 2 at that price point.now would you like the attribution on this specimen?

Valentine 4a R-1 the 53 with arrows is ranked in the series at 74/77.
However the 1853 no arrow H-10 is another story!
As the mintage was very low,and the second days production was melted before it was released.

I’d love an attribution! I notice some die clashing.

One can see by studying this specimen how these toned in albums. Notice the reverse heavy dark tone from the paper.

Ive seen 1853 arrowed h 10 's that you can actually read the date on the reverse from the clash .
Remember that with high mintages more die pairs are used. The 53 is a date that has alot going on...a pointed 5 as well blunt 5 arrows no arrows and remember the no arrow coin when minted was worth more as its weight is higher than the arrow specimen. That said the 53 no arrows was melted down the next day. Plus you had 1853 P &O both arrows and no arrows produced.

@Paddy54 you seem to know quite a bit about this series. What would you estimate the value of my coin at? It’s tough to determine comps from completed eBay sales so I’d love to know your opinion.
    Thanks!

Also, since you seem to enjoy 1/2 dimes, here are three from my son’s type book. He’s only 11, but he’s been working on the type book for 4 years or so. There’s some nice stuff in there! Only needs the 1860-73 Legend to complete the row.

Mark your specimen wont grade....but guess what 80% wont due to being messed with cleaning again to the toning. But do not let that spoil your purchase as it definitely is a vf/xf coin so somwhere in the $50 range.
I would of picked it up at that price . I picked up this 1852 a few weeks ago again cleaned at some point
    But it was under $40 20211204_131518.jpg 20211204_131456.jpg 20211204_131623.jpg

Cap bust half dimes are getting very pricy even the lower grades. Those I would be more selective for a type set slot. But any 40 to 50 $ that aren't trashed are well worth the money.
All in all you got a nice specimen that given an acetone bath wiill look very nice. I give majority of my purchases a acetone bath.
But remember you only need to satisfy yourself....as everyone has an opinion and they are just thatan opinion. For the money you did well... one last thing a warning....these little gems have a way that can become habit forming.....as I now have two double slab boxes filled of both cap bust, and seated halfdimes. Just about 20 some shy of a complete set from 1829-1873 mostly the keys, and varieties that I haven't cherrypick yet.
This is a very useful site.

Here is another half dime site....let your son go on and attribute his 1835 a nice vf/xf specimen. Which would most probably be priced these days in the $150-200 price range.
You both should be able to walk through the site step by step to obtain a die marriage as well R value.
I be more than happy to do it....but will let you enjoy doing it....again a warning of addiction* as it is fun to sit down any really know everything about this coin....as well the history of that time peroid.

Thanks for the link…unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be working. I love attributing varieties…I’ve had lots of fun with Overton variants of bust half dollars Ofer the years!

Ok good im glad its a great site owned by a member here on CT . That was my next trick put out an APB
On getting the site to work.
I have a date set and working on die marriages and variety specimens I believe that I have under a 100 specimens in the collection....working on the missing ones but, finding and affordability is sometimes a issue.
So many die marriages to search out.
