I would advise weighing it or taking it to your favorite local jeweler and asking them what it is made of.

You can usually take it to most coin shops and they will tell you. If they're not terribly they may even weigh and test it for you. Check out the link, good luck! BTW, those are usually on ebay and they're usually pretty cheap like less than $15. :D

It's not from the California goldfields , they all have the denomination on them . Yours doesn't so its
a fantasy piece . Though still collectable if made before a certain time . I know theirs a link somewhere here on CT to help you identify it . I'll try to find it .

Interesting, I have not seen a California Territorial dated before 1850. But that does not mean, they do not exist. The style seems not to match any known style 1850 - 1870. Good luck,

If there's a bear on it, it's fake. If you're lucky, it has a little gold.

Brewer, was short on time. I assumed that when I stated token that it would tell you it was a fake California gold piece. Like Swhuck said if there is a bear on it, its a fantasy piece. Some were made of gold usually low grade gold. I haven't done anything with fractional's for years.

I see a little green corrosion, I would think that would mean some sort of brass composition.

Your'e right on that . Most likely brass with no gold . There's more fantasy pieces than real probanbly a 1000 to 1 or more .

When I first started collecting, I won an auction on eBay for an uncertified California gold piece. I couldn't believe my luck when the bidding ended at $10. Later that year, I brought it to a local show, and a dealer said that it was fake, and the seller didn't state that in the auction. I still have it today. :)

I have one dated 1849, VERY thin, and is real gold. No tarnish around the edges, no brass. With gold chain. Have owned it for 35 years. Are ANY of these real or are they all fakes. thanks!
