Has anyone ever heard of the "E" in "CENT" possibly having been mis-struck or even altered to look like a "U"?? I recently came across one and am just curious if anyone else has ever seen or heard about this. Thanks!
Yes..that is a relatively common occurrence..some think it's funny. It's an alteration by someone who thinks it's a neat thing to do.
I have also heard of this alteration. It's crude and technically, the coin is damaged, causing it to lose its numismatic value.
ok i dont know if this is going to fly but can you post a pic. if not of the whole word then just the U
It was commonly done in the 19th century. I have seen/heard of others. There was one on a flying eagle cent that I saw. added: I just saw the above title, and NO, it is not an error, a post mint re-engraving.
I have seen a fair number of them. I've even seen thm on flying eagles, indian heads and even a couple of Lincoln wheat cents. I also own a AU 1835 half cent that has been reengraved in that fashion. I also have an image of an off-center 1850 era large cent with that engraving slabbed in a PCGS holder.
I put this in the "ERROR" forum because I thought that here I would get the best answer here. Clearly I was right in doing so and I greatly appreciate the help. Sorry if this offended anyone.
It didn't offend me, just pointing out that it wasn't an error. Glad to see that you did not think so.
No what offends me is the damage done to the coins - some where pretty crudely done. But not the topic - you use to see these all the time on ebay. I haven't seen one in a while.
Relay take the C off or the T off of the word and post a pic. I would just like to see how they did it as I have never seen one.
Here's a link I found with a decent pic of one. http://www.24carat.co.uk/frame.php?url=1847usaalteredcent.html
I was just getting ready to take a photo but the one shown on the link is almost exactly the same. Mine has a slightly raised "ridge" running down the center of the "U", but other than that, it's a match.
