I’m having a difficult time trying to figure out if this coin is either an error coin, or just damaged. If anyone has any input thank you so much!

DEFDAM - Definitely Damaged. Not a mint error of any kind..

Those Cents were popular with Brothel houses. They would alter the letter E in CENT to say another vulgar word. Looks like an attempt to change it but it was done wrong.

    IMHO

Thank you! I was pretty sure it was just damaged, but being so new to collecting I was doubting myself!

This is a rather poor attempt at what is normally called "a lewd alteration". They are rather commonly-seen on US large cents.

Welcome to CT @Allieb90. It never hurts to get others opinions and this is the best place I know to do that, so ask and post away. Like the others, I'm just seeing a PMD, Post Mint Damaged cent.

Wow!!! I don't get interesting info like that from reading The Numismatist.

If you or anyone else is not easily offended by vulgar words go to Youtube and search for The Hoover Boys Brothel and you will see an example of what one is. The hoover boys don't use profanity and it's a fun metal detecting channel.

I'll check out Hoover Boys. Now I'm wondering if that (1 cent = 1 xxxx) was how much it cost for the "service." Can't be. Too cheap, I would think - even in those days.

I've come across some Canadian large cents that also have this type of "creative" alteration

It is just the result of an immature teenage boys mind. They have nothing really to do with brothel houses or the price of services. As John says they are commonly seen on large cents, but I have seen it on Indian heads and even wheat cents. I even have one on a classic head half cent. Just somebody suddenly notices the similarity between the two words, and crudely changes one into the other.

Hi Dan - It would be best if you can post a pic on a new thread.
    Go to:
    >Forums
    >Pick one (Coin Chat, U.S. Coins, for example)
    >Click on "Post New Thread" button next to your Profile Pic.

There is a message that says I do not have the privileges to post there. Also there is nothing that says “start a new thread.”

Dan, since you joined just today, I believe you'll have to wait for an email with a link to click on to confirm and activate your membership, following which you should be able to start a thread.
