I have an 1803 Louisiana purchase nickel with just the jefferson face on the front with no date or writing on it ,and the back of it is lousiana purchase 1803 with the hands. Any idea if this is a error or what its worth? Thanks

Mine does not have any of that writing on it, it's just the plain face. Anybody else have an idea?

Well first year of the "nickel" 1866. Before that there were half dimes. We would need a picture of what you have to tell you what it is.

Hard to say from the image, but it looks like an extremely light strike or a thin blank was used.

If that is and it was struck with no writing or date on the front of it, would that make it valuable as an error coin?

I think a better picture would be needed to determine if it is really an error or not.
Based on that picture, camlov2 is most likely on the right track.

Is there any chance you could get a picture of the reverse of the coin as well?

If they put the current president on a coin in 1803 it'd be quite a story.
At first, I thought maybe you had some kind of medal, but from the pics, I'd say you have a PMD nickel.

the die may have had grease stuck in it, but I also think it is a washer coin.

I found this thread through a google search because I found a coin today exactly like the one described in this post. The condition of it is quite worn, but it's apparent that there is no and never was any text on the obverse of the coin, including a date -- it's just Jefferson's face. The reverse appears to be normal. I couldn't find any information on it anywhere else!

Sorry for the poor quality of the images, I don't have a scanner here and tried to make due with my phone's camera.

Edit: I also just noticed that Jefferson's nose is almost missing entirely so I am thinking this is a very light strike, but the fact that there isn't even a trace of any text is curious to me. Thanks to anyone who can provide any insight!! :)

Grease filled die, and if you look closely you can see that traces of the mintmark are visible. It does look like there are some traces of some of the letters.

I guess my response is late to these posts, but they're dryer coins, not washer coins. Although, I suppose a commercial washing machine may do similar things.

Welcome to CT Sandy. There were no 1803 nickels made, so I'm not sure what you have. Can you please post a clear image of both sides of the coin?

No you don't, none were produced until 1866.
