I came across this and just wanted to know what other people opinions are. I have tried to determine whether its genuine based on internet resources but it is challenging. Thanks in advance for your input.
The coin does appear to match the B-14 die pairing with the off center bust. Tho I'm not thrilled with the overall look of the piece I'm going to stick my neck out and say that it's most likely genuine... probably just been harshly cleaned.
1795 Bust Silver Dollar Real or Fake I came across this and just wanted to know what other people opinions are. I have tried to determine whether its genuine based on internet resources but it is challenging. Weighs 26.7 grams. Thanks in advance for your input.
You already have one thread with the exact same photos. Did you really need to start a second thread (about 20 minutes later) to ask the exact same questions?
I'm leaning (heavily) toward fake on this one. I have a few examples I've obtained over the past year and this one looks remarkedly similar. Most of the ones I own have at least one mistake on the edge lettering, but they are 90% silver, and the weight is dead on.
If nothing else that coin looks heavily tooled. I would not call it genuine unless it was in a holder already.
It's a fake, or at least 99.9% chance it is a fake. It's been a little while but for awhile almost all of the fake Bust dollars of any date you would see would be from this hub. The hub has a few flaws on it that show up on every die they made from the hub. I'm sure somewhere there is a real 1795 coin that they made the hub from, but as a rule I see those flaws it's a fake. Also I think the edge is too good to be real. These coins were given a lettered edge and then struck. I would not expect to see straight up and down flat edges. The edges would have been flat before the strike but during the expansion of the planchet during the strike the center of the edge would expand faster than the top and bottom. The edge of a coin struck without a collar tends to be rounded.
That 1796 marke "Replica" is such a bad fake that they would not be able to market it as a real coin. I guess they are cutting their losses on this one. The OP coin is a fake too. The "vampire variety" has been making the rounds on the blogs.
I've been calling them Vampire fakes, or from the Vampire hub for many years. I don't know if I originaled the name though.
