Probably my last coin for the year and not one I expected to get any time soon, but the price was right
Nice do you know the Variety ? Here's some good reading if you into the technical part of these coins . Massachusetts Coppers: Introduction (nd.edu)
I'm pretty sure we have the same reverse (M) but I "think" your obv is 12 (so m12) but is best guess but the arrow bunch on the reverse is M 100%
Nice one. My state was part of Massachusetts until 1820 so I have one myself. A coin ive always liked
I'm from Massachusetts so I had to have some Massachusetts coinage. This my Massachusetts 1788 Cent. I have a nice Pine Tree Shilling but, don't have a picture of it.
I ended up picking one up years ago here from another member on this page. Not the best condition, but I've always wanted one and the price was affordable. Such a cool piece! I never tried to attribute it or anything. Not even sure if that is a planchette flaw on the reverse, or just wear. 1788- MA Obv by BostonCoins posted Feb 15, 2017 at 8:47 AM 1788 - MA Rev by BostonCoins posted Feb 15, 2017 at 8:47 AM
That was the first coin to carry the “cent” denomination. One of my favorite colonial designs. Mine is a VG and I’m in the market for an upgrade since I live in Massachusetts.
This was my first Massachusetts Cent that I purchased in the 1980s. I have it listed as a Rider 6-N. Here is my high grade example, which is a 1789. I believe that this a Ryder 1-D. The "closed S" in "Massachusetts" indicates that the dies for this coin were made by Jacob Perkins. Perkins made a name for himself later by his innovations in paper money production.
Not many people know that the Popham colony in Maine was established in 1607, some 13 years before the Plymouth colony. The Popham colony failed though, the colonists returned to England without deaths like the Roanoke, the Jamestown and the Plymouth colonies had.
I have just started getting into early copper. I posted my 1788 Massachusetts cent earlier in this thread. I'm attaching a copper I recently acquired. 1785 Nova Const.
