I got this coin which i've found in the collection that was my grandmothers. I was told it's a token, but it weighs 26 grams 1.5 grams lighter than tokens are supposed to weigh. I'm not sure if it's a legit coin since my grandmother did have it for most of her adult life. can someone help me figure out what it is? Thanx
I use to own one created in the early 60s supposedly using the original dies. It got stolen with many of my best coins later. Many copies made of this historic coin.
aundinlothar. Online relates a lunamud, Dec. 13, 2016, "While cleaning out my Mother's estate etc." Response - mostly, a Fake. Unless you bought your's at Heritage Auctions, a cool $1.41 million green-bucks !!!
There are several metal versions of Basher's restrikes series of the 60s, similar to his confederate cent restrikes on ebay rather often. here is a graded goldine version. Bowers also made some in 60s. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1961-Conti...lled-Dollar-HK-856a-NGC-MS-64-PL/392050303235
When my children were young, they saw me 'working' with my very modest coin collection from when I was a kid in the 50's and 60's. In an attempt to get them interested in the hobby, I showed them my copy of this 'Continental Curency' piece. It is a very poor casting of the original, with very poor definition of the States/Colonies names within the circles, done in a medium to represent pewter, I assume. Anyway, I asked them to help me learn more about this 'coin' and, since I worked for Xerox at the time, I made them each a copy to assist in their research. Within a few days, they sat outside the garage waiting for me to come home from work, because their research had determined that we were now RICH!!! If this 'masterpiece was pewter, "Dad, it's worth over $10,000.00!!! If it's silver", they screamed, "it's worth over $1,000,000.00!!!" I know it was cruel of me to do this to them, but is there anything more beautiful than the excitement of a child at Christmas? That's what it was like! My apologies for boring you with this ancient memory.
I love this. Just a month or so back my four year old was looking at some old coins with me. He was especially marveling at the double eagles. I asked him what he liked about about them and he replied, "can I have the chocolate that's in them?.... Gotta love kids.
Weight is only one factor and useless without pictures of the coin. Post some clear pictures and we can give you an opinion.
I don't think TLCMOMMY believes her "FUGIO" to be authentic, same as I feel - I (and probably 'she') were just offering more info on our reproductions. I would be more interested if anyone remembers how they obtained their repro. My fading memory leads me to believe I ordered one from an ad at the back of a comic book, which would place it sometime in the '50s. Any comic book collectors out there that would be willing to look (wear your gloves!) at some old comics they may have and confirm my suspicion? If, for some reason, members would like a picture of my obvious fake, I'd be glad to oblige - but, like I said earlier, it is a really poor reproduction!
By the way, you all probably remember the ads in the back of comic books I'm talking about, right? "X_RAY VISION GLASSES", "101 MAGIC TRICKS EXPLAINED", etc.
