In my introduction I mentioned I have a 1723 Rosa Americana crown over rose of questionable authenticity. Here it is. It is smaller than the red book picture, but is the exact size of the 1722. It weighs in at 5.4grams. I'm sending it to ANACS. But I'd love to hear what everyone here thinks.

I just found out that ANACS does not do colonial coins. If it is real (and most people I've talked to think it is) it's a ground recovery piece so PCGS and the like would just body bag it. Any suggestions?

Well there is one grading company that I don't really trust for their grading but they are pretty good at finding out if its real or not--and they would slab a problem coins--PCI.
I think you could send it off pretty cheap---might be cheaper than ANACS---and get it back pretty fast!

I found a discrepency today between a coin listed in the ANS database (record #[SIZE=-1]1989.99.131) and Breen. The ANS attributes it as Breen 140, but the weight they have listed (5.3g, which matches my coin) doesn't coincide with Breen's listed weight of 3.98-4.3grams. Any ideas?

Breen while a great numismatic and the author of a great book made a good many mess up's in his book---I would say that ANS is right in this case.

    British American coin.

Thunder_puck,these coins are of interest to British Commonwealth collectors,as these were the only ones issued for circulation throughout all 13 British American colonies. These coins were struck by William Wood, who also issued the Irish coinage that is referred to in 'Drapier's Letters' by Jonathan Swift.

What does Krause price these at?

I don't know who Krause is, but Red Book lists it as $1000 in EF and $450 in VF. I don't know anything about the strength of the strikes or mintages. My main concern is of authenticity. It does not pass the ring test, but neither does a new penny. I think this has to do with the zinc content in Bath metal, so that's a non-starter. It measures 22mm and weighs in at a whopping 5.6g. Also, the ANS list Nelson.16 as a reference. Any idea who Nelson is/was?

Krause is a pub. company that prints a large book every year with listings of a good amount of coins minted from many if not all of the counties that mint coins--they also list a value and weights and such--its a great book if you collect World coins--but there are errors in it just like Breen has---

    Errors,especially with British Commonwealth coins.

Speedy, you're not wrong about errors in Krause. They're always making errors in the various chapters on British Commonwealth coinage, especially with the Hutt River Province Principality's 'Fathers of Baseball' series coins (listed in Krause's 'Unusual World Coins' catalogue) being one of those countries. The 5 series of coins aren't differentiated.
