$1000 Montgomery Note #297 "photo uploaded"

102_0069.jpg The best way to educate you about this note, without actually being able to show it to you is to tell you the "family story". I have in my possestion either the real montgomery $1000 note #297, or a fake that is as old as the originaly would be. My grandfather was given this note by his grandmother with the strict words of "take good care of this, dont show your other brothers that i gave it to you, and please dont loose it or damage it.... this is the real Mccoy". My understanding of how she obtained it was that her grandfather gave it to her under the same terms and understanding that she gave it to my grandfather. The original holder of this real or fake was my great great great grandfather Johnston who enlister on the confederate side at the age of 18 during the civil war. Now either i have the real deal and everyone thinks its obviously fake, or I have a fake that is indeed as old as the original would be. Ive tried contacting crutch williams about it....but no answer. Can anyone give me some advice as to how i would figure out the actuality of this note. And remember just because #297 is on the fake list, there still has to be an original out there that was used. thanks for any of the help guys, James

    If it's real, then:

    1. It would be printed on fairly good-quality paper, which would still feel paper-y, not brittle. Dark brown, brittle paper (chemically treated) was used for a lot of the replicas, since apparently people think that that's how "old" paper should look. Nope.

    2. The signatures would be handwritten, and likely very faded with time. They wouldn't be printed in the same ink as the rest of the note. Replicas generally have printed signatures.

Thanks for the tips. the paper is obviously a cotton-y type paper. 100% sure that its not parchment or chemically treated paper, and the signatures are just like you say they should be.
Only question i have is what does the reverse and front side look like, is one side supposed to be blank, are both sides supposed to have the same image but in different colors? any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds like you're right, either you have a genuine note or at least a contemporary counterfeit. Doesn't sound like a replica anyway.

Would get an expert opinion on that either way. If you can post a pic would be nice.

nice note. Alot of times, and maybe not in this instance, but a contemproary fake can fetch more then the original :)

Either way .. post pics :) please :p

It is not a genuine note. A genuine note is printed in two colors on the face -- black and green.

    The back is blank.

Here is a picture of a genuine note from Heritage Auctions.

alot of folks have the 297 note. If, after reading this thread, and you still think that you alone have the real one. Take it to any coin/currency shop, and they should be able to tell you for sure. But before you do that.. re-read Numbers post above!!! If it doesnt pass his 'tests' then its cant be real.
