I thought it would be fun to post our own "100 Greatest Ancient Coins." I know it's hard to pick one coin as your favorite from your collection, so maybe post the top 3?
I narrowed it down to my top 16 ... I'll try harder to get to a handful of favourites (it is a very difficult task) => and kinda like picking my "favourite song", it will most likely vary depending upon what mood I'm in, ya know? EDIT => After a bit of thought/sacrifice, I've narrowed it down to "9" finalists ... I think I'm gonna aim for half a dozen?
Okay, I forced myself to pick "5" of my "current" favourites: 1 - Constantius I (AE29 Follis) 2 - Caracalla (AR Antoninianus) 3 - Syracuse Heiron I (AR Tetradrachm) 4 - Otacilia Severa (AE Sestertius) 5 - PAN & Athena (AR Tetradrachm)
Decided to take a break from posting my AEs It was tough picking 5. They are not posted n any order. hmmmmmmm...can't pick...here's the 3 coins i shelled out the most cash for....don't know if that makes 'em great or not...but they had the greatest impact on my wallet i suppose. 1. justinian i follis 2. sep serv denarius 3. sassanid drachm
I would like to show my 3 favorites: 1. Siculo-Punic AE 17 2. Kushanshah Hormizd I 3. Nero Sestertius
Too many to pick from. I love all my coins. But, if I must, these are perhaps the top five according to my mood today: 1. Amisos, Pontos 2. JULIUS CAESAR 3. MARK ANTONIUS 4. CALIGULA 5. NERO (CLAUDIUS REVERSE)
This is completely unfair. To choose only 5 is harsh, cruel and unnecessary punishment. As a Probus and Septimius Severus collector I needed at least one of each of these. I needed a Papius Gryphon. That only leaves me two spots for my Greeks! Ptolemaic Kingdom, Ptolemy VI Philometor, 180-145 B.C., Tetradrachm, Svoronos 1489 Kyme, Aeolis, AR Tetradrachm, 165 - 140 B.C. L Papius Denarius Serratus, Papia 1, Sym. var. RRC - Septimius Severus denarius - RIC 494a corr. (very rare obverse legend variety) Probus - RIC 064 - Bust Type G (Lugdunum) (IIII)
I have good-sized group of what I think of as my "favorites", but these are the ones that I really like: Vespasian AR denarius (my first denarius): Libius Severus, wih Ricimer's monogram on the reverse, AE4 Anastasius I AV tremissis: City of Ravenna, Ostrogothic Kingdom, AE Decanummium King Theodahad of the Ostrogoths, AE Decanummium Visigothic nummus, mid 7th century AD I tried to keep it at five, but it didn't work, apparently
A couple other members posted six, so I'll post six of mine here. These aren't my six most expensive, and it's difficult to say which coins of mine are my favorites, but I think they add some diversity to the ones posted already: Antoninus Pius aureus Agathokles tetradrachm (scottishmoney: this should cover your request from the coin you mentioned earlier in the thread): Euainetos dekadrachm: Alexander the Great Distater: Mytilene hekte: Circus Maximus denarius:
