Just found this at work and thought I'd register to learn a bit and find out what this might be worth.

I found a brand new strap of $2000 worth of $20 star notes, in sequential order. Serial numbers range from ef04468501* - ef04468600*. I can't remeber the year right now but I think they're 2006. Are these worth anything more than face value?? Thanks guys.

What is confusing is the thought that star notes are to replace damaged bills at the Treasury. It appears these are actually 2004 notes, but 6,400,00 were printed. Does BEP feel their quality control is so bad that they plan to re-issue that many notes? By damaged they must mean by normal circulation as well. Bill's have no more than a 18-24 month life expectancy. Is this correct?

All replacement notes are printed first. Then they can be used as needed during regular production. The amount that are printed is less than .05% of the total production of regular notes. Sometimes these noted that are not used, are then placed in circulation or destroyed. So, any star note is worth saving and better in UNC. :)-O)

    $20 Series 2004 (*) Star note - Atlanta (F) district FRN:

    SN: EF 0446 8501 * through EF 0446 8600 *

Second run of 3,200,000 printed from a total printage of 6,400,000.

4,468,600 is greater than 3,200,000 (extent of the first run) but less than the total run of 6,400,000, therefore your notes fall into the second run for this district in this Series of replacement/star notes.

According to the book I have on currency on p. 242 of Small Size U. S. Paper Money by Oakes and Schwartz 6th edition. The number of the 20's is 320,000, 640,000 instead of the millions for the star notes from both books. I feel like some of the numbers are a mistake in the printing of the first book. Of the 12 branch banks only 8 had replacement notes. The lowest numbers came from Boston, and New York, and Philadelphia with only 320,000 each. Boston had two series with the same number, New York only had one, Philadelphia had three runs, but only one with 320,000.
When you look at the 9th edition, the break down is different. Some of, but not all of the stars, are printed both in Washington, DC and Fort Worth, TX, so, you need to be aware of this too. Good find. :)-O)

From the Standard Guide to Small-Size U.S. Paper Money 1928-Date, 9th Edition, by Schwartz and Lindquist, they reported NO $20 Series 2004 (*) star notes were printed for Atlanta in Washington DC, only in Fort Worth:

    $20 Series 2004 (* stars)

    $20 Series 2004 (non stars)

Perhaps if someone has the New 3rd edition of A Guide Book of United States Paper Money by Friedberg they can post figures to help confirm, and advise us if numbers were revised.

Here's a picture that I took, if it helps any.

The details I gave above were accurate. Not sure what else you maybe be looking for with these notes.

It's a clean looking note. If you are keeping them, place them in mylar sleeves, such as SafGard currency sleeves, individually, for protection.

So they're not worth anything more than face $20 a piece? If so, will they ever be worth more and when? I'm sort of new to this so forgive me if it's a dumb question, lol.

Those are the magic questions. If any of us knew 'when' something would be worth more we'd all be rich and powerful numismatists.

If you are in doubt and feel there may be value in the notes down the road, which there may well be, save them. In 20 years from now look around at the values again. Right now, they are still new and common and not worth terribly much, if anything, above face. That's not to say that you couldn't try to sell them in an eBay auction and find a buyer willing to pay more, but it's unlikely to fetch much at this time. IMO

It's from the Atlanta branch, series 2004, and was printed in Fort Worth, TX. Now, if you do not need the money now, place them in a sleeves and salt them away for later. What do you have to lose. If not just save a few with interesting numbers. Look for any that do not look right. Cutting, centering, gutters, out of line numbers, overprints front and rear, shifting of the printing areas. You have to remember that most of the stars printed are less than .05% of the total productions. :)-O) If you can do this, and have time, then it will later will pay off to some degree.

Wouldn't be surprising. But it's also possible that the series was still in production when that edition was compiled. The Dallas stars, in particular, were a very late printing.... See here for a chronological table of all the printings in this series (the stars are at the far right), or see here for a listing by district (the stars are at the end).

And, yes, the Atlanta star, with two full runs of 3.2 million notes each, is one of the more common stars for this series. Still, consecutive uncirculated examples should be worth a decent premium over face value.... If you had one circulated note, that'd be tough to sell for more than $20, but we're talking about a full pack in CU condition here.
