Hadrian, Caesarea, Cappadocia, AR drachm I know most of you shop for coins from a list but I like to go to a show and see what follows me home. The above was today's take from a very small show. I bought it for a number of reasons none of which had anything to do with its poor condition. None were paricularly good reasons since I don't really specialize in Hadrian and this is a specialist's coin. 1. It is a drachm while Caesarea didrachms and hemidrachms are seen more often. I found two of these on acsearch but both were much nicer. https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=62312 2. The obverse legend includes at the right an R for the B in CEBACTOC although most letters are weak or gone. 3. The reverse legend spells out "Pater Patridos" while the vast majority of coins using this title abbreviate it to, at most, Patri. 4. The seller was a friend and, while I was there, I saw no one else looking at his coins. I did hear three people ask to see his 90% silver or try to sell him something an ancient dealer would not want. I only went to the show because it was under 10 miles from my home. 5. This is the third coin I have bought in March after not buying anything in February. Being on the wagon is no fun. The above reasons are not necessarily in order.
Hmm...I can't see the coin either. I don't buy coins from a list. My collection mostly consists of coins that have followed me home. The wagon sucks.
Huh. Now I can no longer see it. I wonder if Doug edited his post and accidentally deleted the image and I was signed on before he made the edit.
My coin purchases are beginning to take on a life of their own. I'm buying more coins based on spontaneous appeal and not so much by following my usual formula of Judaean Jewish only. The Roman Judaean city coins are not far from the original plan but they do mark the departure from my ancient purchasing roadmap.
i concur with the rest of the group. i hear and agree but cannot see. it just shows a blue pic place with IMG. i pushed on it and it says i don't have permission to view(00)
I have no idea why some have problems seeing images unless you are not signed in to CT. I know some Forum type software only displays images to those who have logged in. The white background coin is the CNG specimen; mine is on black. There is another listing on acsearch from Gorny & Mosch but it is the same specimen. Update: Now I know the problem. I sent the image to Roman Collector asking his help with the grammar of the legend. When I posted it here, I did a copy and paste but CT software only shows the image to names on the original Conversation list. Sorry. I'll fix it.
Thanks for sharing your coin buying thoughts. I enjoy coin shows. I see a lot more RR silver than RR bronze. The few cast pieces that make it to local shows are usually too rich for my taste (pocket book). It is interesting to hold the coins before buying them. I often look at neat coins that are not in my collecting area. Like these - The last show did not produce any "good" stuff. I did buy a couple of items from dealers at the show. I want them to come back. Four anon Byz coins - All of them went to my wife for making the trip. (She also got a yarn shop trip out of the deal.) I picked up some of these in an ugly case. Not sure if I will use the case, but the trays can hold coins for display.
The last time I went to a coin show there wasn't a single ancient dealer there. There was a HJB rep, but they didn't bring any ancient coins with them. A couple of dealers had a few ancients in the mix of other stuff. Here a a couple I picked up from a guy out of a junk bag of LRB that I never posted.... When I got home I found out I had an Honorius of this type I didn't remember I had! Oh well, this one actually looks better. I also came home with a modern coin I already had! My memory is horrible! I didn't have a phoenix globe type, so I took this one home also. My wife went with me to this show as well, it was in a casino. We both left with less money than when we went in.
Nice bird on a ball. Interesting that the Romans knew the earth was a globe and we still have flat earth folks.
