My favorite modern Italian piece. This is the reverse of a 50 lira coin from the 1920's. 4 Lions pulling a chariot. Pretty neat. Traci
Italian coins can sometimes be very hot. I'm always surprised by the hot bidding for some obscure Italian coin: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300376136479&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT The above is a beautiful coin of Napoleon's second wife, Marie Louise of Austria, who later ruled Parma after her husband's exile. (Interestingly, to my ears, the Italian spoken in Parma today has a beautiful French lilt. Although Marie Louise was born in Austria, it seems she brought with her to this small Italian city the French culture.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Louise,_Duchess_of_Parma guy
Ah, thank you for the link! Somehow I managed to miss that topic. So the design was initially made for a marriage medallion? Interesting indeed ... As for the flags and sails of the ships, well, it makes sense that the wind for both comes from the same direction. Although ... on a coin from Danzig the top and bottom flags point in different directions. On purpose? Christian
The favourite in my collection of italian coins is this one: 20 Lire 1927 KM 69. Value: $250 I paid: $125
This isn't a modern Italian but it's my newest to my collection. It's a 1920 wood grain 5 centesimi coin. In hand it looks alot better, like most others that's just the way it is.
KM catalogue mentions a very high price for 1927 2L coin. Can someone please shed some light on whether they are accurate and is a 1927 2L really that hard to find due to low mintage? Regards,
